gearbox driveshaft oil seals

D

d4v1d sm4rt

now unfortunately leaking due to being disturbed on a phase 2 quadra

Are they definitely leaking from the gearbox, or out of the drive shaft. There is a roll pin which secures the driveshaft and if there is not sealant over both sides of the pin it can leak through those.

Otherwise you can get the seals from Renault.. and possibly else where but others will confirm that.
I can get the part numbers if other dont get them before I go home

I Have the same problem on my phase 1. i bought the box and it was dry, thought i will try to make it last longer by changing the seals and both sides have leaked ever since. am thinking about changing them in situ if there is enough room. thats interesting you say about the pins leaking as i dont think they are standard so am going right away to check your point out. cheers danb

The two roll pins have to be fitted so that the gaps are 180degrees opposite each other. After this you are meant to squeeze a small amount of Renault thick sealant over the holes.
There's a technical note for it if you want to see it?

do you have that technical note lewis? i checked my pins yesterday and found they are just any ol roll pin and slightly longer than need be so my guess is they are not original although they were in the old gearbox which also leaked. thinking this is more likely the cause of my leaks rather than the seals.

There was just a blob of silicone in the bottom of my driveshaft holes, looks like it was done from the factory though

Thanks for that info about the roll pins I think you are right about that as the original renault pins were a bit broken up when i got them out so i put just non standard ones in which i remember the split was inclined towards the gerarbox so it would have leaked in theory. Presumably the double pins resist leakage.
Is there a procedure for reinstallation of the renault pins?
only the drivers side leaked though! annoying and illogical
Will put some silicone on them when they go back though to make sure, than:thumb:ks for that tip, very useful

The other leak from this new gearbox is from the back of the gearbox, just behind where the large cush drive plate( which i have just ripped off trying to get the end plate off) is where the rear propshaft bolts up to it.
I have removed the small plastic cover to reveal a 24mm bolt with a waisted centre section and large washer which have both been removed. Under that i can see a spline and i presume that the propshaft u/j carrier just pulls off the spline?
I have tried two tyre levers, a blowtorch, supercrack penetrating oil and even a puller and a hammer but it still refuses to move!
Any ideas? Is there a special renault puller for this? It just looks like a front driveshaft spline but its stuck fast.
I am loathe the put this back with a leak but i cant get it off...

put the original box back in and interestingly the driveshafts seem to line up on the holes much better, degreased the whole end of the driveshaft mating splines and just siliconed them in the end and the holes so we will see if they leak now. Used std roll pins cut down to 39mm so i could silicone the end have seals spare in stock now and a quadra box now for sale

The shafts will only align properly one way ,ie you can be 180 degrees out .Slightly offset holes if you've got them wrong so perhaps they were if non
std roll pins or brute force were used .

dont think the old ones had ever been off as they were the double type with one inside another but one was cracked so decided to get new ones but the dealer got the wrong ones (they are NOT the same as a clio i now know) interestingly the new style clio pins are a spiral wound type. interesting about the 180 degree out bit as well (what were they thinking?! why not just bore it central!!?) lucky i had a universal set of roll pins in stock...
