5 GT Turbo Fuel tank and sender!

Hey guys.
I have gone to change the fuel tank today.
Dropped the old leaking tank out, to find that the new one has a smaller fitting hole for the sender unit, only by about 5mm.
The new tank I have did not have a sender unit with it.
So now I'm stuck!
I have a good tank with no sender, and a leaking tank with a sender.
Why are the sender holes different size?
Renault main dealers can get me a new tank, but they can not tell me if it comes with a sender, and they don't list a sender on their system?
Any one encountered similar problems?
Thanks.

Tank looks identical.
Just sender units are different size.
I've attached images to show.
Don't know what's the best thing to do moving forward?

When we had to take tank units out we always refitted the tank nut and still do so, to prevent distortion of the tank & sender unit hole especially if it was left open more than 20 minutes with or without fuel in the tank. (I am sure there was a tech bulletin on this)
A couple of question though, Was this "New" tank stored with the nut in place & if so did that nut have the spring ring in place?
Is it the actual sender that won't fit or is the nut that will not screw in to the hole & finally is there any marking embossed on the tanks?
To answer your question about a new tank coming with a sender unit, they never use to & tanks supplied for the current range still doesn't.

As per Red21 really, are there any part numbers on either tank ?. I could be wrong but a quick search shows 7700759681 as a GT Turbo tank. I know there are different senders across the range. Not sure what the differences are but every time I see one on ebay etc it's never the right part number for a GTT. If it comes to it you could repair the old tank, I assume it's leaking from the yellow bung as per normal ?. Out of interest how much do the dealers want for a new tank these days ?.

image.webp Hi guys.
Thanks for the input there. Much appreciated.
So, my new tank is second hand. It has not had the tank nut fitted wile stored and its this tank thats is 5mm smaller in diameter.
I'm guessing distortion is the problem, as mentioned above. The sender fits in, it's just the nut that won't go in.
It is the yellow Bung that leaks, and the tank had no heat shield fitted so it's in a bad state near the exhaust. It really does need replacing.
New tank from main dealer is about £350.
I'm happy to go down that road. And after reading what red21 has said, the new tank will come with a tank nut fidded, right?
Then I will just use my old sender?
Spare tank has a code on it. I will attach an image. Thanks.

I am not 100% sure if the new tank will come with a nut, its been a while since I fitted a new new tank to a R5 (Some current vehicle tanks do but some don't) but as it would been stored correctly & not had any fuel in it, the plastic hasn't reacted which is the cause of the distortion in both weight & chemically especially with modern fuels as they contain 10-15% or more ethanol where's fuels from 1986 had none or very little.
I remember that replacement nuts at the time had a sprung ring with a gap in the nut so it could be compressed slightly so it may be worth while to order a nut kit (7700775991 approx £23 +vat) first as they are a lot cheaper than a new tank.

Some stuff called Milliput is your friend in this instance. Just mix the two
parts together and stuff it all into the recess where the yellow bung is.
Then allow up to 12 hours to fully seal and harden. You can use a strong
mix of washing-up liquid, both as your lubricant and residue dispersant.
The most important part is in thoroughly mixing the two parts until it's
completely uniform.

Steve

Hey Steve.

So, I ended up buying a new tank and sender from Renault main dealers. It had to be shipped from France.
It will go great with the new pump, filter and rebuilt carb!
(As long as the mrs don't find out!)
I've not got round to fitting it as yet, however. When the old tank is off, I'm planning to get some and repair It.
Then it will be in the "parts for sale" section!
I'll let you know how I get on with it when the time comes!!
Thanks for your input dude!
