Fuel pump compatibilty

I take it the fuel pump fitted in the Clio Williams is the same to that used as standard on the 19 16V?

I only ask as the website I am looking on has one for the Clio Williams and other 19's but not the 16V and wanted to be sure before I drop the tank off, then go hmm it doesn't fit.

Any guidance appreciated,

cheers.

if you take the pump out of the housing thing and put it in the 19's housing, yes.

I think a lot of pumps are standard and will also fit.

well that’s an issue.

Theres a serious amount of counterfeit gear about just now, sold on ebay AND in shops.

Walbro, Bosch etc are often not what they claim but cheap china tat.

However some cheap china tat is ok. I have a china tat pump in the chammy, the 1st was dodgy the replacement was fine though.

mine was 40 quid off ebay.

Make sure the tank is cleaned of debris the main cause of noisy pumps this

Cheers,

Pump is pretty noisy now and I keep seeming to be stalling if the engine is stone cold then have to move slowly on full lock, when I guess you are loading it more at low revs.

I was reading your article 'EFI fuel pump upgrade' you mention checking the fuel pump regulator.

Could you tell me where it is and how I could check its operation.

your symptoms don't really relate to a dodgy reg.

Its at the end of the fuel rail with the short vacuum pipe into it. unplug the pipe the pressure at the injectors increases (richening the mix).

i've found ebay pumps very hit and miss. found best thing is a trip to scrappy. Jeep cherokees have really nice high flowing in tank pumps all been Walbro's and have worked great. even got one in a uno. be very carefull when stripping the housing, years of fuel makes them brittle, and if you need to get a new one they are very expensive

funny that, we used to get a load of Jeeps in to have pumps changed, always went to bosch units.

May have been because all jeep owners are pikeys and they sit not getting used or they use stolen fuel water down with all sorts.

Problem is 2nd hand pumps have all sorts of issues. Chances are it'll be fine but without scoping them you can never tell.

but you can fit loads in your tool box, and try them out later. sure if dont work you can return to scrappy if you paid for it. but if you got them for free its a saving. often you can smell out a good one just by seeing how clean the tank and the gauze is.

Swapped the pump over today, the rear drivers side bolt which holds the tank on was an absolute $**t to get out as the thing undid so far then just didn't want to play ball, after some help from the hacksaw we were back in business.

Suprised at how much fuel was still in the tank when the needle indicated zero, about a bucket full!

Put it all back together and put about a gallon of Asda's finest petrol, the thing then would not fire and the orange fuel light came on, never seen that before on mine I always assumed it didn't work. Put another gallon in then sat there for what seemed like ages with it turning but not firing, thinking I did connect everything right didn't I? Then it fired up, phew!

Old pump was whinning when in the car and did have a rattle when you shook it, not sure if that is normal but suspect not.

New pump was a Walbro from Wanapart and seems quiet and after a quick ten minute run it seems to have more get up and go in it and the car now seems to handle the over-run far better.

Just thought I would give an update on the outcome.

Now off for some celebration Cider!!

Excellent news, glad you've got it sorted! Give me a shout if you need a hand with anything else.

I'm surprised there is that much fuel in the bottom of the tank. I try never to get too low on fuel but my level sensor has been a bit iffy recently!

for future reference prime the fuel system first, short the relay terminals so the pump runs you will see the fuel lines jerk and hear the fuel in the rail which its primed. Or if thats too much effort turn the ignition on and off a few times so the pump primes.

My ebay chinese pump is acting up, not happy.

And Tom my level gauge is acting up, full tank is anywhere from 11.8 - 12 - 12.3 gallons these days. Used to always be 12.3 gallons when filled to the brim.

After reading about 11 gallons for ages mine now gets back up to 12.3 gallons
