Front Lower Ball Joints

Dilemma.

All the suspension is currently off the car, we are replacing top mounts & drop links as they are a bit worm. Fine. £350ish for that. The lower ball joints are also a little worm but no too bad.

Now the rears come in a £30 a pop, the fronts however are over £200 each!!!!!!!!!!!

Is this a common part of just another cracking Renault pricing exercise!?

Its v6 specific Ali. The angle of the two bolt holes are at a bigger angle to the balljoint compared to lesser models. 200 quid sounds about right. I did mine last year and it was somewhere in that region.

Not sure if this going to be correct but I usually go to eurocarparts.co.uk to get stuff for my diesel Clio if doing a a service, disc brakes etc. It's good as you go on type plate in then links the parts with that car. I have just put my plate in for the V6 and it shows Ball Joint (Front Right & Left) - £21.30, however no mention of rears.

Not sure if your V6 is in Glasgow Ali but they have a branch there but not in Aberdeen yet.

Id be very cautious of using factor parts here.. IIRC Mark Garner had an issue, or encounter with non Renault parts. Not to the detrimental effect to his car I hasten to add!

Yes, Eurocar Parts do say they stock the v6 items but they are actually 172/182 items. The bottom arms are ok from there though as again, they are stock clio parts.


Are you upgrading to the 182 Trophy bottom arms Ali?

The bushes are solid as opposed to rubber. I haven't done it but wish I did now.

Hmm just chatted with europarts & yup indeedy the balljoints are indeed there,These easily accessable via the reg no, dooh took the original balljoint along & not even remotely similar!, The guy in the shop thought they looked comercial!As a matter of interest are the Mk1 balljoints the same as ours (Mk2) ? ironically if you google the part No' it takes you to Russia! Will keep looking. May just reuse these they are not terminalAnoying tho!

Seems if a group buy was to be organised this would be very worthwhile, can’t believe the price of the fronts.

Is there a lot of engineering in ball joints? Can’t say I have ever seen one opened up but it seems straightforward enough.

Would be cheaper and better to convert to a rose joint and have a CNC'd fixing for the bottom arm to attatch it to.

I spoke to Lemfoerder in December regarding these, they looked into it and asked ze Germans about production. They came back and said they been told that the quantities would be in 1000's as a minimum. So it's a no go really, unless a group buy counts as 10s off for each and every owner :/

I have been trying to get a loan of a Faro Arm to CMM the existing arm/upright assy.
There are 2 routes to go:
1. Oldskoolbaby's CNC-Rosejoint route [I can't help but thinking a rosejoint down there is gonna wear out in no time though, plus maybe outside accepted working range of one]
or
2. A plate to adapt the rear balljoint to the front arm, the taper is identical but the mount isn't.

If anyone is interested in following this up, let me know, as it's a pretty simple thing to do, I just need motivating after work..

Have we any pictures of the said lower ball joints and what your after measuring / scanning?

Got a Leica laser scanner, CMM etc at work plus a nice big 5 axis milling machine to play on every day
