Exhaust Resonance

Hello exhaust gurus!

I've got a 1996 R19 8v. Ever since I bought the car a year ago, around 2200 RPM the exhaust in my car gets particularly loud and has an irritating/mildly nauseating effect for those sitting in the back seat. It's not just the sound, it's more that it feels like a pressure wave. In the front you can't hear it as much and at higher or lower RPMs it's not that loud.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

is it an aftermarkt exhaust or a standard system?

if it is an aftermarket sport system it will be loud, if its a plain normal system then it could need replacing.

As far as I know it's a stock system. I heard the sound before I bought the car so brought it to an exhaust shop. The guy lifted it up, smacked on the muffler a couple times, then declared it was ok... Didn't seem very scientific to me but I suppose he would know?

i really don't know if this will help but i used to have the same exact problem and the issue was with the "Cat", you know the middle muffler thingy.

the problem was that this piece was dead and full of carbon, so i replaced it and voila it's all smooth & silent now.

btw, later on i removed the whole thing, got a stainless steel pipe all the way in one piece to my new "Borla" exhaust and man it do sound lovely.

My Audi A4 was resonating like mad,so I took it to an exhaust centre and the rear box had broken down inside, which made it sound Raspy? (Is that a word? :)) Anyway, replaced it and it was fine.

OK I'll take it back to a different exhaust shop and see if they've got any ideas. Sounds like there may be a part that needs replacing somewhere along the pipe.

this is what my first thought was, the muffler breaking down internally
