Exhaust manifold

As my engine may be coming out in the new year at some point for a major service I've been thinking about what else could be done at the same time and sticking a manifold on to match the Spike Janspeed has come to mind.

Are there bolt ons on the market? A full decat would be great. Do Janspeed still make one for the full system? I am aware this only had pH1 flanges on the end but I was thinking it could be made to match the system Spike had commissioned?

cheers

Or if anyone knows of second hand standard items that I could have to have some made? Would anyone be interested?

The Janspeed manifold set came as a complete system. If you can get one then its worth while. Shaun's lunar grey is the best sounding ph2 by a mile in my opinion and he has one with rounded tips.

I had a custom manifolds made for my phase1 as wanted something different. They made a lot of difference to the way the car felt to drive, it felt more reactive and easier to rev, I have no cats on mine with the quicksilver backbox and it is very loud.

Hi Ollie,

I went the other way round and bought Janspeed manifolds with the sports cats and had a custom back box made, I love the sound. However yours just sounds incredible, that video is epic and the flames as well (the guitar hero smilie has gone?!) A few years back when having my work done I bottled it with the sports cats and the loudness but in hindsight now with how little the car gets used an exhaust like yours seems to make more sense, although you must know some one to sort you a favour come mot time. That is one of the best sounding Vee's there nice exhaust, great vid.

Slight side question, has anyone had the exhaust manifold ceramic coated and is it beneficial?
Andy

thermal fusion sintered ceramics are good for a variety of jobs, firstly stopping corrosion and therefore are good for aesthetics but colours are used for differing heat dispersion, white coatings tend to keep the heat in the exhaust and black radiate it so a white system will reduce the engine compartment temperature, reduced heat will also help with stopping degradation of components such as starter motors where the epoxy bonding the magnets becomes overheated and fails, mincing the innards, likewise wiring and any other plastic materials. Most organics tend to be out of their comfort zone at relatively low temp (80-120C) and age rapidly, 10 degree raise in temp halves life! manifolds need to be in really good condition for coating as a very uniform surface is required once blasted before coating. Surface needs to be to ISO 8501, visual cleanliness of Sa3 with a profile of around 50 microns!
Wraps work equally well and are comparatively cheap but can drop off and do not offer same protection.
Household radiators painted black rather than white are much more efficent but don't look as pretty

Pays your money and takes your choice! I would and do!!

R&R, thanks for the info. I had heard most of that before but didn't know if it was just a case of cooler manifolds but hotter downpipe = same engine bay temp as before the big expense. On A110s that still have the engine 'undertray' I know this works on the original manifold (especially if the downpipe is wrapped) but the Vee engine bay is a completely different ball game. I wrapped the manifolds on my previous A310 and it certainly had an effect but the big back box in the bay just got hotter but the front was cooler.... :s

Your shopping list should read:
Full manifold back Janspeed system with decat, collector pipe delete and straight pipe backbox if you want (imo) the best balance between dbs and sound quality. It's MUCH louder than a sports cat system mind (and will fail MOT) so go in with your eyes open. Janspeed can put on any tips you want. Takes longer for them to fulfill order though.

Ollie, i've said this before, but yours sounds incredible!!!!

Take it you've got a friendly MOT man?

Thanks :) yep there is no way this would pass on emissions and it would probably fail on just how loud it is, but I've not yet tried to put it through an mot lol wish me luck.

Jon,

I already have Spikes Janspeed on. I was toying with contacting Janspeed direct to buy their manifolds but with a flange to mate up to Spikes system?

Or its custom all the way.

This car is a toy and always will be (unless it gets bumped for an Escort one day) so I don't car how loud it is as long as it sounds good.

cheers

To be honest Iain I'd say just sell Spike's on (plenty of demand) and opt for Janspeeds full system. Less hassle, less waiting and (most likely) a better resulting sound. Mine sounds incredible as does Shauns. Decat if you want all the dbs you can get, sport cats if you want 8/10 and no MOT faff. Just my 2p.

Fits no problem Ali and mine went on with no bespoke parts required. Only change I made (as did Shaun) was to get rid of the horrid slash cut tailpipes. Janspeed can do this to order, though does take a bit longer to be done.
