Exhaust gases sucked back in to the engine...

Seems like some manufacturers design their cars to allow exhaust gases to be sucked back into the engine in order to reduce nitrous oxide emissions. The issue is under certain circumstances debris from the catalytic converter, which breaks up due to age and/or unburnt fuel coming into contact with a very hot catalyst, being also sucked back into the engine that results in scouring and damaging pistons, bores etc.

Apparently there is no warning that the above is happening, and the only reliable solution is to either replace the cats or de-cat.

I found the technical explanation provided by an Aston Martin specialist quite enlightening: Explain Catalyst failure on V12 engines

Does anyone know whether the Vee is affected by this, or have experienced this with any other car they have owned?

Mr 2 roadsters and celica 1.8 suffered with this on the 99-03 1zzfe engine , pre cats would break up due to oil contamination from dodgy oil rings and suck cats back in to engine . I have just rebuilt one in an mr2 due to stuck rings .

Interesting. Was the 2ZZ-GE engine also prone to this? If so, then that would be quite catastrophic as I understand that the Metal Matrix Composite (MMC) material used for the cylinder bores cannot be honed or skimmed.

Hi , not sure but possibly as lots of parts are interchangeable / rings/ shell ect going of info on parts box's . Judging by the state of the pistons I took out I suspect poor quality oil and extended service intervals , lots of sludge and gummed up everywhere @85k .

I commissioned an ERG blanking kit install in my Disco 3 back in the day. I think I tried every trick in the book to stop it going wrong... but that was quite a challenge with an ageing Land Rover!
