Engine tapping when cold

Hi guys, when I start my vee you can hear a tapping/ knocking noise, it goes away after 3/4 mins and performs well with no loss of oils, I've heard it could be phasers, any ideas?

Ok cheers Ian ill check it, only started doing it yesterday! The oil level IS pretty high but shouldn't be that, runs beautifully still. Goes after its warm. Doesn't increase under throttle either so doesn't even sound like engine :s

GX53 BVR used to do it ! hydraulic lifters (tappets) ???? for the record V6KDH has never done it ! GX53 BVR is the blue mk 2 in my blog pictures :)

Yeah sounds like tappets but coming from the bottom maybe? What did you do about it? sounds expensive?..... Haven't driven it since

Mines been doing this for years and even changing the tappets the noise was still there

Later found out its the camshaft deshapers with some changing the solenoids that control the oil feed to them others living with this as part of the cars normal behaviour when warming up

Providing it quietens down after a few mins driving from my experience of 20k miles+ with the tapping from cold not damaging my engine, I wouldn't worry about it

If the solenoids fail you should get an engine warning light as well as a worst case

Oil wise suggest you use a flush and silkolene 5w40 pro s

Awesome, thanks a lot, it goes after 3/4 mins tops! I'm going to do the cambelt next July so I'll replace pretty much everything then unless I need to before!

No probs

One more point my engine light did come on recently and pointed to a lost connection to the solenoid

My garage checked and cleaned the connector so you could try that

As a precaution I've ordered a new set in case they're on the way out - bad news is they're back order not be available till August!

Fortunately just bought an E55 as a runaround so won't be car less if they happen to fail in the meantime :)

Yeah Im lucky enough to have this as my second car too. I'll see what my local garage thinks. There a great bunch, I've got a video but I'm on apple so can't put it on here :(

Where did you order from and how much were they? Not a belt off Job from what I understand?

Ordered from member Clarkiev6 at carlton exmouth garage as he's a specialist on here

Think about 110 each and not a belt off job

Have fun with your vee!

Legend, thanks :approve:

Got the same problem on cold start up.

Waited 6 months for two new solenoids, changed, and noise still there

Now gota change the pulleys, which is engine out..

Hopefully that will solve it?

No way, it sucks, mines actually not been doing it lately, I'm going to do the cambelt next year so with any luck I'll do it all then.
