Devil restoration

Good idea Erik, and it has quite a mean look to it. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it gives you the additional sound attenuation that you are looking for.

Geoff

very good idea...

maybe use a slightly larger trumpet with more material if it doesnt work as good as you need it to.

Incredible! It actually worked! The sound is noticeably less sharp. The high frequency noise has clearly decreased a lot. Generally, I think the sound is still a bit too loud to be comfortable on long drives but it is never as annoying as it used to be.
I still have one optimisation to perform. I noticed that the last few centimeters of the main muffler are not filled with wool. We assembled the muffler by sliding the inner tube with the wool around it into the outer tube. This probably pushed the wool to the front end of the muffler, leaving an empty space at the rear. I intend to cut some slots in the outer tube, pull the wool towards the end and weld the slots up again.

Erik

Special thanks to EPS exhausts for the great tip. http://www.uitlaten.com/main.html

I have aligned the exhaust today. It neatly fits into the gap in the cover plate under the rear fender. I also sanded and painted the plate itself so from behind the car looks neat again.

Notice the change in colour of the new parts. The perforated tube got yellow, the wool got bright blue. That's probably temporary, I expect it all to be black soon ;) .

Cheers,
Erik

Hi,

Another experiment with the exhaust. I have added a ring to the rear to see whether that would make any difference. Well, it did not. No effect at all.

Looks nice though.

Does anybody know what the rectangular "ears" are for? I have seen them on a lot of Devils in different sizes. Someone suggested it would be to attach something (heat shield, sound damper???) but I have never actually seen this.

Any ideas?

Yes I know, It was the branding of Devil. Their Devil Logo was put on there, and to prevent to burn off it was placed on a "spacer"

Here is a cross section of the muffler with some dimensions.

Regards,
Erik

I cannot quite read the dimensions. For the actually resonator what is the dimensions?
Length, diameter, circumferance. Anyone? As suggest on this board previously, Burns
mufflers out of california maybe a good start to make a copy of one. If not maybe I will
order one from overseas.

These are the dimensions (is my hand-writing really that bad? :? ):

(Devil) pipe going in to the main body: diametre: 55mm, wall thickness: 1.5mm
Main body: Length: 173mm, diametre: 114mm, wall thickness: 2mm
Perforated stainless steel tube: diametre: 63mm, wall thickness: 1mm

The parts indicated "restant origineel" are parts I re-used from the damaged Devil exhaust.

In the mean time, I did experience a small issue. The muffler is quite a lot heavier than the original Devil. This resulted in a crack along the weld seam where the fixation bracket joins the 55mm pipe. This was easily fixed by welding on a support brace (an old nail actually).

By the way, I have seen a lot of offers of stainless steel copies of Devil exhausts on Ebay lately and John Price will probably have some left.

Cheers,
Erik
