5 GT Turbo Deadline 9th June 2018

Yes time is ticking on.............. but things have started moving. Spare engine collected this weekend (engine, gearbox, subframe, calipers). Only just fitted in Shavers small trailer but it did the job. Its now sat in the garage awaiting strip down. The plan is now to work on this engine, as it was a known runner, once built the current engine can be removed and swapped. My plan to do a lot of this myself was changed when the question was posed......."babe, if you build the engine, will it make it to Hereford?"....................i confidently answered "Of cause"...............but over time started doubting myself. Therefore help has been sourced. I'll keep quiet on my helper until he's fully involved, but to say i'm happy is an understatement.

Heater bought for the garden has been suitably relocated. Hopefully this thread will see a little more action in the coming months.IMG_3306.webpIMG_3307.webpIMG_3310.webp

Right, So my master mechanic turned up for an hour last night. I'd assumed he wanted to come round to chat ideas and have a look. Instead, he arrived tooled up, stripped the head and various other bits! made me look like I was standing still! Had a good old chat about 5 owners we knew and plans for my car and he was off! I woke this morning to the two photos which show the "slight" improvement on my inlet manifold. Amazing what a little sand blasting can do.00e50f50-22ef-42aa-8083-48bb807725fb.webp2745e2c7-058c-407c-9390-758290bae410.webpIMG_3321.webpIMG_3322.webp

He's hoping to get hours in here and there and make progress, its all good with me and means i can order parts and clean or sort bits as required. I cant actually believe this is happening.

Oh and I'll leave you to guess my master mechanic, I'm sure a fair few of you know him.................

@sparkie has been working wonders on the bits removed so far from the engine. Tonight he's popping down again to remove and take further stuff. I'll take the opportunity to pick his brains about other ideas I have. Last time he was round I was trying to varnish doors and not get runs whilst chatting to him............I failed. Photos below but in a random order.

In other news I've ordered a 2 gauge A pillar pod from Jonathan Ward who was very helpful. I currently have a 3 gauge pod, but it was rather crudely done and Jonathan's will be a massive improvement. To relocate the 3rd pod I’ve also ordered a mount to replace the clock in the dash. That bugger never worked anyway.............does anyone’s?
I've also scanned eBay.fr and ordered a left hand side rear light, something I've been meaning to do for ages. The postage is more than the light..........meh
Other things are bubbling too :)1c69d3f4-6937-4a77-b6a9-c845d263b714.webp35a2998f-6386-4230-bb56-f1958fdef8d9.webp86acf257-bb7f-4c5a-aa2e-b06137758bcd.webp88eb131f-a8ee-4da0-a77b-f170f5626861.webp513659e4-5c6e-4267-a88c-d35dbaa3e1dc.webp2269709a-5660-4767-8847-ab418cef50ba.webp

Another little update, the block is now fully stripped and Mark has taken things away to sand blast and paint. I now need to clean the block and sump etc and get them looking as best they can. On the strip down everything came apart easily and there were no major concerns. The shells are the "std" and we assume originals, the oil pump has the usual wear marks so ill order new internals. The only other issues found were little fragments on the top side of a few of the pistons, I’ve taken a photo, nothing too serious. Also on removing the liners, the bottoms are damaged as they were quite snug. I'll hang on to these for spares and order new for this engine as I want it to be as good as it can be so I’m not cutting corners.

List to purchase as follows: (Andy i'll skimlink :))
Piston & liner set
Oil Pump Internals
Std size main bearings
Big end bearings
Thrust washers
Bottom end kit (seals etc)

Now I need people’s opinions on valve stem seals. Marks opinion is to run without, one less thing to fail and cause problems. However, I don’t want to turn up somewhere, start the car up with a puff of blue smoke and see someone look at my car like its fucked LOL.......hmmmmm????
Finally, I'm also looking at buying a different cam, initially I was set for the piper 285 based on other people’s posts/builds, but after doing some research and talking to Mark, there are plenty of other options. I'll see where this goes.

Below is also a few photos of the head, its cleaned up nicely, plenty of thickness in it too.2cf5300e-7c73-4a7c-8806-21ca36d6fad2.webp1385f298-f716-40f5-894a-8518f068887d.webpIMG_3377.webpIMG_3379.webpIMG_3382.webpIMG_3384.webp
