5 GT Turbo Deadline 9th June 2018

Thanks for the responses gents.............even though they are divided :punish.gif:

Nice to rock into work and get some advice / motivation, it all helps.

I fully agree with the "if it aint broke dont fix it" method, only i dont want to JUST get it running. Engine bay is the one place that lets my car down. If i'm taking it out, i'm doing it once and doing it properly (fingers crossed). Maybe wont sent the gear box off, but will clean it and get it looking half decent.

Steve - If there comes a time for a flair, it will go up. I live at the top of the pub run into Stourbridge, see the Image below. I'm on the "Bridgenorthern" line next to the Foresters Arms. Only 11 pubs to the ring road :drinks.gif: beers would be on me.CXBbXatWsAAtaLr.webp

I love a new toy........... It's definitely not flimsy! the UPS guy came to the office door puffing and panting............35kg's wimp!

My tuppence worth:

Engine and box out the top.

Driveshafts are easy. Drain the box oil.
Passenger:
Remove wheel. Jam a screwdriver in the disc vents to stop wheel turning and crank off the 30mm hub nut. Undo the 2 nuts on the strut bolts, then the track rod end. Knock the track rod end out, remove the strut bolts and pull the stub axle carrier forward. Knock the shaft back with a drift in the little divot on the front as a locator so you dont damage the threads. You'll be able to wriggle the spline all the way out. Then get a 3/8ths drive 13mm socket with about 15" worth of extensions for the inner joint. Look back down the shaft and where the inner gaiter meets the gearbox there is a metal plate with three 13mm bolts in a triangular pattern around the gaiter. Undo them, be ready for oil spillage, pull the shaft out. Cover the spider joint with a carrier bag and a zip tie.

Drivers:
Repeat the above for the outer end. For the inner end, you need a hammer and a thin tip drift. Rotate the shaft and between the box and the inner joint you'll see a hole with a split pin in it. You'll need to drive that pin out, this is usually a bastard to do if you havent dont it before or if its been in there a while. Once you drive that pin out, the shaft just pulls off the spline.

If you're lucky it'll be a one piece pin to drive out (updated version). If not its the original 2 piece, the outer part goes in one way the the inner goes in the other end and expands the outer one to lock it all in place. They SUCK as you never know which way to knock it out, so I just pick one and kick the shit out of it until its out LOL

No need to take the track rod ends off on a gtt to pull the shafts out, only need to undo the hub to strut bolts. Easy job:D

yeah everything dave wrote except disconnecting the track rods off. in fact on every renault 5, 5 gt, clio mk1 or clio 2 ive never had to do that.

I know you don't HAVE to but it makes the job much easier - for a few dugga dugga's with a gun and a tap with a mallet it's worth doing IMO. I don't like stressing the boots when I pull the shaft either. Each to their own though.

Right, making room in the garage this weekend, will be moving the Golf down to my brothers (he doesnt know yet). Ryan P (old RTOC buddy) and local lad (proper fully qualified mechanic) is trying to free up some time to give me a chuck.

Also bought a decent foot pump, think my old ones seals had gone, as it took forever to pump up anything. I need to get the polished Williams wheels off, as I think the valves are leaking, they go down over a few weeks and I dont want to bugger up the tyres.

they go down over a few weeks and I dont want to bugger up the tyres.
The beads leak on old alloys sometimes too, I always ask the tyre guys to use bead sealer. Thats where the tyre meets the rim, if thats not properly cleaned and/or sealed air leaks out.

I've always taken engine and box out the top, to give a bit more wiggle room I whip the turbo off as well, it doesn't need to come off but it's one less thing to scrape on the firewall. Draining all the fluids and removing as many of the ancillary components won't hurt either.
Already been said but remember to disconnect the shift linkage!

Just been told Euro Car parts have a 35% online discount until Wednesday. I've had a great deal on new coil packs and spark plugs for the golf. Might as well take advantage of the situation and get the service parts lined up for the 5.

My list consisted of the following

Spark plugs
Oil filter
Fuel filter
Fuel pump
Head gasket kit and rocker gasket
Oil
Coolant

Can anyone recommend anything else or preferred brands to get. I just need to order on line before the 19th Wednesday. Comments as always welcomed.

The price is inflated on the euro sales mate they aren't really cheap and they always supply wrong parts - avoid

Filter mann or fram etc off ebay
Br8eix plugs
Corteco mellior headset - ebay again
Total quartz motorsport 10-50 fully synthetic from ebay - might want some cheapy oil to run in if bottom end rebuild
Type d Renault coolant 5ltrs ready mixed - Renault or ebay

There's usually a 52% or so 'sale' for GSF... normally there's a midweek sale then a weekend sale, repeating perpetually.

Really pisses me off, I hate having to play silly buggers with ever changing voucher codes.

Yep ECP always have an online sale or discount, usually the code is on their home page anyway lol. The prices do usually come down lower than the store themselves can do though. If you have time shop about the internet and you'll likely find cheaper I only use a factor if I need something NOW.

Remember to skimlink eBay and amazon stuff - you donate to the club without it costing you anything!

Oil Filter (mann), NGK Plugs, Total Quartz 10W50 and Type D coolant all ordered.

Head gasket - just waiting on a supplier to confirm something but will order in the next few hours. This week has been manic, first time i've managed to look at this site since last weekend so thanks for the comments.

Any preferred brands / spec for uprated fuel pump and filter.

Just a small update, parts are accumulating but no work has actually been undertaken. I'm having some building work on the house :de: , the plan for the builders to bring everything around the house was going to cost me more money and would of wrecked quite a lot of hard work done in the garden this summer, the simple solution was to come through the garage, not ideal for me, the golf has been moved into temporary accommodation and the 5 left in situ. I can’t move the car into the middle of the garage as planned due to worry of it getting damaged and the garage is full of building equipment. I'm not letting it get me down its just rather annoying. Garage will need refreshing now too :dy:

"Garage freshen up" is an excuse to gut the place, paint the walls, floors, big bench in, shelves up, cupboards up, renault based tat up on the wall. :) good for motivation that, helps with any build. Although it does take a bit of time.

Good thread, look forward to seeing the progress!
