Small update, nothing else has gone on with the 5 at the moment as we are still deciding on what we should do with it yet, however the 172/182 conversion seems more feesable just due to price and availability.
However is there anyone that as had experience of fitting these or anyone has a build thread on it??
I can appreciate if it is not the easiest conversion but would be great once finished
I would recommend you go boosted with the 178/182 conversion. If you ever consider selling the car the engines when converted seem to go for good money !
It's a pretty straightforward conversion. Use a 5/Clio/extra f block front engine mount, reuse the 5 gearbox mounts and it bolts in. Can use the 5 driveshafts but 172 shafts/hubs and brakes could be an option.
Again, 5 or extra radiator, Gtt aftermarket exhaust with a section to mate to 172 manifold.
172 engine harness, obviously needs chopping and splicing into oe loom.
(I also have a 172 package for sale)
small update as been a while since i last posted
have acquired a c1j lump before christmas for a bargain however missing some key components like carb and turbo however they can be sourced
also bit of a gamble but picked up a 'barn find' carb however being the modern youth that i am (25) this is actually the first car i have owned with one!!
soooo if anyone has got any detailed views of jets and screws that i need as i believe some are missing that would be great
UPDATE
Couple weekends ago i started stripping it and pleased to find virtually no rust whatsoever! Various parts being labelled as i dont know what im able to re use, couple thoughts have ran through my mind mainly being suspension and brake options.
Heard that mk1 golf coilovers fit with adjustment but what exactly? Also any changes need to be made for the gt turbo brakes? Straight fit?
@jxke would be the guy to ask regarding coilovers, i think hes done the same to one of his so should be able to assist. i think you can straight swap gtt brakes on to your hubs too
Mk1 golf coilovers will fit with a bit of work, one of the bolt holes lines up spot on but the other doesnt. The 5 hub is a bit wider than the two shock mounting plates on the golf coilover too. Use ph1/campus top mounts.

Bit of an update of the xmas period, forgot to post up about removing the old lump out with the help of my dad
Due to us running out of light the GTT lump is not currently in however was a great opportunity to replace the starter while the engine is out
and start cleaning up the engine bay a bit, will clean up the GTT lump befor that goes in too
