computer madness rules over common sense

So renewing the insurance on my Vee and previously it was parked in the underground residents car park. I have managed to rent a garage from one of the neighbours in the same road to store the car in so it's not on public view to the local thieving scum.
Result? an increase in the premium because "cars are more likely to be stolen from locked garages than open car parks"!
I had read about this madness but it was interesting to actually have it said to me down the phone.
So I asked them to confirm that a thief is more likely to steal the car if it is hidden in a locked garage than in a car park? Thieves with x-ray vision I assume?
"Yes I know it sounds mad but that what the statistics tell us"
which of course is nonsense. what the stats say is more desirable cars are in garages than in car parks so maybe they get stolen more but the SAME car is not going to be more likely to be stolen if it is in a locked garage than on view to all in a car park.
But of course the insurance companies are not going to let something like common sense stop them from increasing the premium.
Oh and having a tracker saved a whole £20 ....
madness...... :ihatpcs: :ihatpcs:

Just read on another Forum that several people had insurance quotes go UP if the car had a tracker fitted because " the owner has indicated their car is more at risk of theft"........ so take all this to the extreme and the highest premium will be for a car locked in an alarmed garage with an alarm and immobiliser, guard dog and keys locked in a safe and lowest premium for the same car parked on the street with the windows down, keys in the ignition and a sign saying "steal me if you want" because this shows the car is not worth stealing?
And insurance companies wonder why they are seen as the con men of the 21st century

Hi,
Must admit I haven't come across an insurer that increases the premium if you fit a tracker but I guess it's up to each individual insurer.

Dan.

Bonkers isn't it ....discussed on the Aston Martin Pistonheads forum leading one guy to write he wouldn't bother fitting one because he doesn't want his V8 Vantage back if it's been ragged by someone.. which is fine if you have something common like that where you can easily get another. My Vee is a damn sight more rare ;)

Any excuse to increase the premium.

If you have a non-fault accident (eg someone runs up your back end) your premium will go up because statistically you are more likely to have another accident once you have had one, even if it wasn't your fault.
