Clutch Life

5yr service due this month probably going too motech solutions, my car has done 14620miles now obviously the clutch wont need changing but how long do they last on average and how much too just do a clutch ??

clutch kit is about 150 quid i think, whilst having the cambelt done it's not much work to do the clutch, if the clutch is done alone it will cost nearly the same as a cabbelt for labour charges as you have to drop the engine again..

i had mine replaced at the big service but mine had covered about 60,000 on the one clutch..

would you rather pay 150 now or a grand in a few years time if it does run out?

If you think it will last 10 years (2nd cambelt change time) then go for it. If you plan on using the car, makes sense to change it when you have your cambelt done i think.

Hey Sam, When i had my clutch done by Andrew at Motech he was very reasonably priced in my opinion. The new clutch, rear pads and service came to about £605 in total if i remember correct. Mine is a ph1 so not a like for like comparison but will give you an idea.

Cheers rob too be fair for the amount of miles I will be doing over the next 5 years it would not be worth changing the clutch but will see what the price is going too be first before i decide.

Don't think you have to drop the engine to do the clutch. Subframe off. Drive shafts out. Gearbox off. Definitely only a part day effort.

Guess it depends on how it's been driven also, the clutches can take a hammering if you feather the clutch and give it loads from the off - stinks too ... As with most things, if they are respected and you don't ride the clutch at junctions or traffic lights, it should last years and not need replacing at low mileage ...

There is something to be said with getting everything done at once if the costs are failry modest but it is sensible to be pragmatic ... The water pump, for example, is a no brainer IMHO but a clutch is a bit more of an option.

I had my clutch changed purely as a precaution last year when having the cambelt done.
My original one had covered almost 70k miles with no problems.

When i got my cambelt done last May i got eveyrhting else done at same time which included clutch. The car had only done 17k miles and i had no issues with the clutch but its so cheap to replace once engine's out doing the cambelt and also Scott recommended it. When he took the clutch out it was actually a bit b*ggered even though its not really driven hard and i'd had no issues with it. For the sake of £150 for the part whilst the engine's out it kind of makes sense, plus is nice knowing everything has been done and you've got a new clutch in there...

Well its booked in for its 5 year service in the middle of march at motech solutions, the price should be under £1000 but getting the accurate pricing tomorrow. Decided not too get the clutch done in the end as I think its just not going too be worth it.

same here while i got the cam belts done scott put me a new one in as it happen the old one was fine but worth changing it.
