Clubsport Megane 250 Cup

Cheers Ian. It’s definitely worth doing a proper track day over there vs the normal tourist laps over there.
A much more chilled day.

Neglected this thread a while. Apologies!

So Cliosport Festival at Anglesey. Weather was fantastic, and the track was basically deserted the whole day.

Was an expensive one in terms of fuel and tyres though….

IMG_0133.webp

2 days over here, and 1 day at the ring they’ve done :tired:
Now I’m faced with spending 1300 quid on replacement A052’s, 1200 on Direzzas, or 1300 quid on another set of 18” Protracks and used slicks….. can’t make my mind up what to do.

IMG_0134.webp

Was a bit disappointed that despite the size of the track and the power of the Megane, I still couldn’t gap Ben and Simmo over a whole lap. They absolutely ruined me under braking and through the slower corners. The faster corners I felt like I was matching their pace. I am contributing this to the fact they were on slicks, but definitely running out of excuses now!

I did a gay little reel thing too which seem to be plastered all over IG nowadays

My friend had a little whoopsie too.

Oulton

Looked like a proper grim day on the report, but it was actually alright in the morning. Just before dinner I was half tempted to put the semis on, but glad I didn’t, as it absolutely bucketed down.

IMG_0138.jpeg

I’ve done Oulton quite a few times, but I think they’ve resurfaced a lot of it since I was last there (this meant the first session was a bit of a learning experience)
It’s also one of those tracks which does actually provide a decent amount of grip in the wet - moreso in the proper full wet, vs when the track is drying (as it seems to go greasy).

There wasn’t a great deal on track which was up for a play with the exception of my pals in their clios. Thankfully this time, I actually managed to stay infront of the pair of them.

IMG_0141.jpeg

The laps after dinner were pretty lonely, but were cut short very quickly. I’d noticed there was a noise under braking, which I obviously chose to ignore. Upon returning to the pits, my mate noticed the state of my rear disc.
Pads completely none existent. They’ve only done 2 days and the ring prior to Oulton, so they’re either a wank material, or the used replacement callipers I used are seized up slightly.

IMG_0142.jpeg

Loaded up, ready for home

IMG_0143.jpeg

Present day, or rather, today.

Spent a good amount of time considering what pads to go with after Oulton, but ended up stumping up the ridiculous cost of Winmax W3’s. Ordered November and they didn’t end up arriving until the start of January. No real bother, as I’ve had absolutely zero motivation to do anything cars anyhow.

Of course, not doing things by halves, I’ve also had a set of refurbished callipers from Max at MS, and thought I’d try a set of Delphi discs.

IMG_0106.webp

IMG_0109.webp

Had to strip the wet tyres off my 2nd set of TDs as they’re leaking and I’m getting bored of pumping them up.
Chucked the slicks on so that the cars mobile. Feel like there’s definitely going to be some clearance issues.

So it's been way too long since I updated my thread here. Apologies again for those of you who've seen on other platforms. I'll briefly summarise the more boring parts to get back to date.

  • April - more maintenance on the car, namely replacing the drives shaft (again) for another new one supplied by AUTODOC. This is preparation for Cadwell. The day went pretty well with the exception of killing one of my front slicks (i think it was rubbing on the arch/bumper)

IMG_0824.webp

Had a little tickle with a very well built 330i

  • Also April - post Cadwell checkover of the car ready for the 1st trip over to the ring at the end of the month. Finally got round to replacing the sunstrip too. Much more of a fan of the plain look
IMG_1052.webp

  • Also also April
The annual pilgrimage to Nurburgring. Overall, a great trip, but not without its issues.

I was on the whole, fairly prepared for this trip, having put a bit of time into the car post Cadwell to make sure it was ready to go.

Friday - headed down to the unit to finalise my packing, and when I say finalise, I actually mean start it.
The Megane was still sat on the 4 post ramp, and neither trailer or tow car was loaded up. I opted to go for the minimalistic approach this time round, packing spare tyres, a jack, and my trackday tool grab bag.

By now, you’re probably all getting fed up of seeing the trailer, but I don’t care cus I think it looks mint.

IMG_1087.jpeg

I departed for the 2.5 hour journey to Hull around midday, and arrived at the boat 4.5 hours later - Friday traffic really is the worst.

IMG_1094.jpeg

(Ignore the TPMS warning)

After the debacle last year with my mate not being allowed to travel, I was feeling pretty anxious queuing up for passport control. Everything did go smoothly, and I was soon loaded and sat at the bar.

IMG_1097.jpeg

IMG_1099.jpeg

Some poor sods happened to arrive 7 minutes after the closing time, and were swiftly sent on their ways

IMG_1100.jpeg

Saturday morning

A decent nights sleep on the boat this time, with the exception of some pissed up silly bint running up and down the sleeping quarters shouting AARONNNNNNN at the top of her lungs at 2am.
Passport control on the Rotterdam side always seems to take forever since Brexit #perks but this did give an opportunity to perve on the other motors in the queue, namely:

IMG_1104.jpeg

My travelling companion had managed to get through the boarder really quickly compared to me, so we met up at a small truck fuelling station to just go around the cars and make sure wheels were tight and tyres had the correct air

IMG_1106.jpeg

The drive from Rotterdam seemed to take an age this time, but by 3pm, we were driving passed the ring sign

IMG_1110.jpeg

We unloaded and headed to Brunchen to watch the end of the RCN race from that day.

IMG_1112.jpeg

By 6pm, I’d accidentally ended up on track in the tow car

IMG_1241.jpeg

The conclusion of TF that evening meant a visit to one of my new favourite restaurants in the centre of Adenau, Blau Ecke.
Sunday was essentially the preparation day for me, so I took some time switching the PS4’s with the A052’s.

I spent some time doing some adventuring in the Touareg, and watching TF.

IMG_1131.jpeg

There had been a nasty crash just after Hatzenbach, which was causing absolute mayhem as people were heading into the yellow flag section.

IMG_1134.jpeg

I departed my view spot, and shortly after, one of my clio197.net comrades arrived - having been fisted by the German Police along the way. He’d managed to avoid (only just) the influx of what was reported to be 45,000 motorbikes to the area as the season kick-off Anlassen.

Monday

So this brings us onto the morning of the trackday.
Having had my breakfast, I headed to the track and sat in the pits waiting for the sighting laps. I really wasn’t feeling this, and had a massive headache and was a little bit sick.

Nevertheless, I headed out, and on my first session noticed there was a little bit of vibration on the front end, which I assumed to be pad pick-up from Cadwell a few weeks prior.
Still yet to get that 4 wheels off the floor pic at PF1, but I’m adamant I can’t go any faster, as I’m essentially on the limiter in 4th and not braking before the jump at all.

IMG_1224.webp

We broke for dinner, and I noted that I really was wearing the A052’s down. I had considered purchasing a new set over there, but decided just to take it steady.
I went out for another session, and the brakes were really properly terrible at this point.
I headed for the accommodation, had a check over the brakes, and was greeted with the following on the drivers side (see the crack on the inside of the disc)

IMG_1144.jpeg

IMG_1275.webp

So that was my day over. Silver lining is I hadn’t purchased tyres, but had just put a full tank of 98 in - annoying!

Tuesday was a mix of sulking and watching the second CD trackday. The weather had taken a turn for the better worse. 20+ degrees does not sit well with me.

Wednesday was just a big dose. Got the cars loaded up, packed up, and headed home via the ring sign of course

IMG_1222.jpeg

A mixed trip overall, but it’s more of a holiday really nowadays. Had some great food, beer, and good chats with mates.
Wasn’t brave enough to have the lap timer on/on show, but of the 1 video I did get, I am getting ever closer to the 8 minute mark. I’m booked on for their June date, so we’ll see what happens.

  • June - Much the same as April, I went over, did a lap in the Touareg, ate lots of food, and more importantly didn't break anything. The only difference this time was going over on the eurotunnel. Definitely won't be doing that with the trailer EVER again! What a horrific journey.

Really enjoyed this trip. Was a bit crap with the smaller group of us who went mind.
The Gopros also behaved a little better this time round - One camera just wouldn't work whatsoever, and the one which did worked around 50% of the time.

Second video is pretty cool chasing my mates brother down in his Mk1 Focus RS. It has a G25-550 turbo, so is an absolute rocketship down the straights.

Cliosport Festival 2024

Turn-out from my track baguette comrades was a little better than of recent. We had Ben in the blue 197, Simmo in the white 200, Davis with the LY Trophy and myself

With the exception of getting in Ben's way all day (he runs slicks), the track time was mega. Photos were a vast improvement over last years too.
Thanks for organising chaps!!

Davis let me have a bash of his mk4 too. Here's me piloting his, and him piloting mine.
Once he's sorted the brakes out, it's gonna make a mega clubsport track car.

Driving too close to each other. It’s a reoccurring theme on most days.
It was worse when there was more of us all with the same car.

51395158569_40d331c0d3_o.webp

We’ve had some epic times over the years.

TBH not sure I understand why driving too close is a major concern? I suppose I can see if one stacks it they could collect them all. . . .

Yah. It’s just one of those things. Some tracks are way easier going than others. I guess on the outside it looks like we’re racing and pushing one another too hard. I guess in some ways we are, but we’ve not had an accident so far (touch wood).

Blyton, Cadwell, and Croft are usually pretty chill about it.
