Its been a very long while since i have tinkered with a mk1 clio (non 16v/williams), can anyone refresh me as to some sort of list of possible brake upgrades for the front. Parts from other cars and sizes? I think the basic stuff would be valver parts and they might be comparable to gtt items but really having a brain fart at the mo

Interesting question as I am looking at what hub / brake combo to run and though 172 may be strange and can hopefully use abs rings

Must have been tried? Sure I remember Andrew Cooke using them?

after a bit of searching i have found this so far

238mm Disc, Caliper Carrier and Caliper are fitted to:

R5 GT Turbo - confirmed
Clio1 RSI - confirmed
R19 1.4 models - confirmed

259mm Disc, Caliper Carrier and Caliper are fitted to:

R19 16v - confirmed
Clio1 16v - confirmed
Clio1 Williams - confirmed
Clio2 1.4 16v - Disc and Caliper confirmed, but unsure of hub bolt spacing for Carrier?
Clio2 1.6 8v - Disc and Caliper confirmed, but unsure of hub bolt spacing for Carrier?
Clio2 1.6 16v - Disc and Caliper confirmed, but unsure of hub bolt spacing for Carrier?

All of the above use the same Girling Caliper (different Carriers) that uses the FCP845 (Ferodo) Pad size.

ahh that might be an issue. Cheers for the info, i did a quick google and the 406 brembo does seem to match up to all lesser spec clio 2's which based on the info i found earlier on in the thread would mean they arethe same as the 19/valver so should work the same. I might just go for some clio 2 items to start with as that will get me a newer caliper and 21mm more disk, i was really fond of the brakes on all my 172s so would be good to get them on at somepoint. @Jezer101 has offered me some from his stash of parts requiring a rebuild so will have to eye them up on the car

R19 1.4 calipers aren't the same - more often than not they have the shitty Bendix brakes (the ones with the offset pads) on the front and even if they do have girling, it's the solid discs (so narrower caliper and carrier). Certain models (e.g. RSi and TD) do have the wider vented discs/calipers, but they're still only 238mm. Same as GTT etc.

172 brakes wont bolt straight up, you'd need an adapter bracket.

I've used 21T brakes on the front of my 19 before (same hubs as mk1 clio) using a machined bracket and 21 TXi (4 stud) discs.

@Brucieboy did you do something with fitting 172 hubs on a gtt?

I fitted 182 driveshafts, wishbones, discs, calipers, pipes and hubs to gtt struts and adjustable top mounts.
Gives 20mm wider track than stock gtt but quite a lot of camber. Good for my track setup. Hubs just needed thinning down to fit gtt struts, custom arb mounts welded to wishbones and shortened driveshafts a bit as appeared to bottom out on shaft from box. Not simple bolt on but now got bigger driveshaft splined portion, bigger wheel bearings, bigger brakes with lots of cheap off the shelf options.
