Changing coils yourself

clarkeeuk99

New Member
Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and I've been reading all the coil problems everyone has.

Luckily for me (touch wood) none of mine have gone yet. (53, 14500miles).

I'm going to buy a couple from Peugoet in case they go whilst I'm on the move, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to replace them yourself? (the back 3 or the front 3)

Many thanks!

Phil.

if yours is a mk2...very very simple..just keep the spares plus an 8mm socket and extension in the glovebox, all 6 can be easily seen, checked by unclipping the connector and seeing which one doesnt affect the car by unclipping...this is obviously the faulty one..

so just undo the 8mm bolt..pull out..slot new one in..and tighten...re-connect and voila!

10minutes top..including removing the cover and finding the faulty one..

the mk1...however..has 3 easy...and 3 a complate nightmare..not do-able at the roadside :(

Thanks for that! What do you mean by "an 8mm socket and extension"?

I bought a small 1/4 inch socket set which has a ratchet handle (makes it easier to get under the engine cover surrounds).

Also, if you can't tell the audible difference when diagnosing, i found that the damaged coil smelt like a cap gun.

Any idea where I could get one of these/what do they look like?

Cheers!

Halfords do a line of ratchet spanners etc, and the professional line has a lifetime guarantee so if it breaks take it in and they replace it FOC even if you don't have a receipt

Any tool shop, B&Q, Halfords, just tell them you need to undo an 8mm bolt in a confined space. You should be able to pick something up for around a tenner i reckon.
