Cat back system, or just back box?

I want a new zorst but can't quite justify new manifolds and cats!

Been looking at the new K-Tec back box, or maybe a Janspeed solution.

The thing is from the pictures and website descriptions it looks like Janspeed is "cat back" while K-tec is just a back box. So with K-tec I'd still use the origional collector box and existing tubing. Assuming the piping is of equal quality then surely removing the collector box should be a good thing.

I wonder if the Janspeed manifolds (with cats) are a straight swop, cos if so I could get the cat back system now and the cats later!

Also Janspeed "cat back" is £500inc VAT

K-Tec "b/box" is £530inc VAT

Peter :?

I am looking at exactly same options, am looking to change in next couple of weeks, Janspeed system is £450 inc.vat so i am swaying towards that.

Cant remember but deffo was that price . i will post up contact name and number tommorrow, details are in my folder at work.
I am looking at janspeed £450, redstuff pads front and rear £150 and viper kit £250, delivery for all was £18

The Janspeed is a full system - manifolds (with or without cats), downtubes and backbox.

The other 2 back boxes on K-Tec's site are just that, back boxes. These will fit straight on in place of a Mk1 or Mk2 back box but you keep the collector box.

The Back box inlcuded in the Janspeed system has different fittings and would not fit the standard pipes out of the collector box so you have to buy the whole system.

I'm not aware of any cat-backs.

so are you saying the cat back janspped system will fit straight onto my standard system?

Whats this then? This is what i'm thinking of! :?

Not seen that one before Peter. No picture, so can't tell if it is any more than just another back box..................?

I was referring to the Janspeed full system as advertised on K-Tec.

Guess it requires a call to find out more.

I did consider the full system (as per per k-tec website) but with fitting its nearly £2K!

Hence back box only!

I guess a call to Janspeed is in order!

Anyone know which b/box is louder? K-tec or Janspeed?

Peter :D

My guess is they are very similar and louder than the standard one.
The Janspeed full system uses narrower downpipes than Renault to keep noise levels down though it is much freer flowing as a full system. It is slightly louder than the standard V6 but nowhere near as loud as the Quicksilver backbox I used to have coupled to de-catted renault pipes.

I was thinking of the Janspeed but they used to be awful quality years ago. Are they any better these days?

Other options included the Quicksilver (really noisy eh TRW1?), and a custom setup from Charlie @ ProSpeed who makes some excellent systems for the 172/182.

Noisy exhaust eh Peter? Another tunnel run is it sir?!

i have fitted a k-tec back box and can tell you,you need to have a finely tunned ear to tell the difference in sound from the std back box, which is twice the size and far superior build quality to the k-tec one. a mk2 is slightly louder standard than a mk1 so even a std mk2 back box would be a good upgrade on a mk1.

So is the K-tec back box not to a very good build quality then?

Was thinking of getting one of these K-tec boxes soon, perhaps i might wait and see how you guys get on with the Janspeed.

Hmmm quicksilver might be an option.

And YES I may be considering confined spaces to enjoy the new sounds!

This is rather swaying me away from k-tec! Damn. This is just going no-where!

Will a back box swap make any real difference to the sound?

It used to on other cars I have had!

But the question is how much of this is due to the decats? i'd guess they make a big difference!

Anyone just had the quicksilver back box on a v6?

Peter

If you talk to Charlie (and you should, he's the first person I'd talk to) mention me (Mike with the M Roadster) and hopefully he'll do you a price with a healthy discount on top...he got quite a few MR/M Coupe's through after mine ;)

One word of warning though, he did swear a lot whilst making my mk1 V6 backbox, and swore (literally) never to do another. However as soon as you start talking pound notes he'll forget that and book you in. lol

BigChris has my old Quicksilver back box with cats in place and it is much louder and better sounding.
Yes the decat makes it even louder.

Downside is the price, something like £700 I think, but quality is excellent..

My full Janspeed system seems fine for build quality.
