Car feels weird. Hesitant and Rough. Any help please?

Hey everyone, wondered if you could help diagnose the problem with my Valver.

I've noticed a few times when I first start her she runs rough and sometimes tries to stall. Kinda of like a chug-chug-chug sound and then she'll flicker into life. No problems starting her though.

Then when driving, I slowed for a turning and the battery light came on and again started to stutter and then she pulled away ok. Battery light went off when I pulled away.

Also, when driving she seems very rough, jerky and hesitant on the throttle. :(

Now the other day, when I had the bonnet up and engine running (listening for a noise actually) I saw what I thought to be bubbles in the coolant tank. Would this point towards a headgasket failure? Would the rough running and idle be caused by this?

I need some help as the car is going to get yet more work done on her and whilst it's in I may as well have it looked at. I have ordered a top-end gasket set just incase along with new bolts, so hopefully that will cure the problem.

Any other thoughts? The battery light was a bit weird. But she's got a new battery, starter motor and alternator. And all the electrics work fine. Perhaps it came on as it was about to stall?

One final thing. Gear selection. The exhaust has "moved" recently and isn't hanging correctly. Would this somehow interfere with my gear selection? As I found this afternoon with the clutch fully pressed, when changing gears it was rather clunky as if I had not pressed the clutch enough? :?

Cheers guys n gals! Appreciate it as always!!

nightmare 2 issues mate am afraid!

gear thing cud well be exhaust fouling on the linkage, need to get under there and get a mate to move the stick while u look for it hitting anything

hesitant thing could be any number of electric faults, start by cleaning out the idle control valve and work from there

battery light will come on as the car nearly stalls, wudnt worry bout it

bubbles means the system needs bleeding, from cold leave the cap off the header tank and start engine, leave on untill it stops bubbling!

Thanks for the reply.

I'll get the car in ASAP and get the exhaust sorted, I would check myself but Uni deadlines are closing in so I ain't got time to mess on myself.  But at least I can mention it whilst she's in.

How do I clean the ICV mate?

I'll try out the fix for the bubbles as well.  Some people on RSC mentioned that it could be down to my petrol?  What do you think?  Apparently some engines have trouble running premium fuels, i.e. V-Power, because the engine can't cope with the rich mixture.

Interestingly enough, I ran mine on V-Power for the last 3-4 fillup's.  However, last weekend I just filled up with regular petrol station fuel.  Would this somehow cause a problem?  I'm going to give it a blast tomorrow see if I can't blow any crap loose from the engine.

Thanks! :)

fuelling wont put bubble in the coolant, totally seperate system, try bleeding it like i said, shud be fine on hi ron petrol n all, altho its not likely to do anything as the car wont be mapped for it, so no point!

ISCV, whip it off from inlet, spray shitload of de-carb cleaner through it and work the little shutter inside back and forth with a cotton bud till it moves freely, keep spraying the cleaner in to shift all the crap that comes out

then quick squirt through with wd40 and slap it back on!

Cheers mate. :D

I may buy a new Bosch Lambda sensor as well, to help with the "hunting revs" issue which sometimes occurs.  I have no idea what is fitted at the moment, but knowing my luck it'll be one of those crap universal ones.

Can I check, the gold thing in this (old) picture is the ISCV ain't it bud?  Next to that red thing (haha I have no idea for the names of these things).

Haha can I not just buy you a pint or sommit.

Lol.

Coops.  Cleaned it just before, was quite dirty I was amazed.  Anywho, what a bitch of a job getting those two pipes off.  The one leading from the K&N is proper short.... talk about trying to bend and twist it back on.  Luckily I have thin wrists to squish down in the engine bay. :D

So back on, I switched her on and she seemed ok.  Will test it properly tomorrow morning from cold.

My question! (At last) Is you know the TPS (the red thing).  The wires leading  to it are all frayed and I can see the multi-core inside.  I'm guessing it's not good if these snap?

Where can I buy a replacement and for how much?

Thanks again!
James

problem is they need setting up properly. can,t you just put a heat shrink tubing on the original wires.

Hmm I guess I could, put they still look fragile.  So when you say "setting up" mate.  If I were to remove mine would I be knackered?  How would I get the heat shrink on it?

yes unless you mark it very carefully as it adjusts on the screws i think. i,m pretty sure you can get the connections out of the plastic connector block with a small screw driver. then fit the heatshrink and then put the connectors back in.

I'm with ya now, basically just don't remove the red part. ;)  Golden.
