cambelt service

Big Iain

New Member
I have rung around the local dealers and the best I seem to be able to get is £1090 to do a waterpump, aux belt and cambelt or just the cambelt on its own at £849.

They say they have done one before and it would be the same guy doing it again. The plus is I get a reno stamp to go with the rest in the book and its very local to me. Every specialist is in the south of England and there for travelling costs would prob work out alot more after the service than the above. 5. something hrs was said to be the time to change the belt and 7.1 hrs to change the pump aswell as the belt?? Can anyone confirm that?

Hmm what to do

Thats a rip off, the water pumps about £70 plus Vat and is 5min job once cambelt off (not a 2.1 hour job just check the manuals out) and the aux belt labour allready included in the £849 for refitting so that leaves around £150 for the cost of the new aux belt. Hence rip off.

I would tell them to wistle, have a trip to SG long way I know but this is a once is 5 year trip and needs to be done right, plus he wont rip you off.

I think SG mototrsport are over a grand with the added bonus of air con re gas that I dont need. Only going by the website though.

Prob cost me 300 quid to travel aswell.

Yes its a shame your so far away. Id go back and argue the cost issue though as its not a big job to change the water pump only 3 bolts.

to be honest mate i would take my car near any reno dealer in glasgow, i went to the 1 on pollokshaws road and the salesmen (wearing hid renault sport jacket) asks me who done my bodykit and how long did it take :)

I have had my fair share of dealings with reno dealers and most are useless planks like you say but the dealings I have had with pollockshaws were very good, fitted new seats to my old 172 and helped me out with reno uk in getting them so happy so far!

its a bit longer than 5 mins to take the water pump off mate.....believe me .

Well maybe the thing in the middle of the block that was held on with 3 6mm bolts and had the cambelt looping through it wasnt the water pump I changed then????

Come on clarkiev6, I know you mechanics like lots of Tea and sucking air through your teeth but if that takes any longer then 5 mins to change, when you have the rest stripped to do the cam belt then theres something wrong.

well on the mk1 you have to remove all the pully's and the inner plastic cover to get to the water pump....then remove the pump. this is an extra half an hour.
so if you can get the pump changed in 5 minutes from removing the cam belt covers then please enlighten us.

as for prices etc i use genuine parts only (even on my own car) this ensures that when we go to fit them...they fit 1st time.
also i won't go into the full expendidsure of my garage but i will say that we need to earn £1000.00 per day to cover all the overheads and wage bill.
as a business there are times when i feel its just not worth all the hassle...especially when my accountant tells me i am doing it for the love of it and certainly not for the money.

scott??

:) Chill man!!!

Only playing ya, I do appriciate that a garage has to make money and you all have over heads which increase every day especially in the current climate.

What I found supprising with the waterpump change from Renault was the extra 2.1 hours

well Im down to 800 now with a courtesy car for 2 days from reno, after playing them all off each other I really hope its not cheap for a reason.

Hmmmm .... Yes maybe they just wipe the cam-cover clean with a cloth and give you some made up invoices for parts [smilie=hide.gif]

what I dont know wont hurt me lol reciepts and a stamp is good and as long as it doesnt snap lol she made a balls of it. Told me it was 300 as they were doing a deal on clio's that monthand confirmed it was for all engine sizes so I booked it. Only fo her to ring back and apologise like fuck and said she would do it at cost which is aparantly 800. We shall see.

Well said Clarkie about the over heads!

I charge for 8 hours labour but it normally takes longer with all the ceased up bolts and air con. pipes that are corroded!! (plus most Phase 1's come in with the rear tyres through to the wire on the inside edge after some dohnut down the tyre bay has adjusted the tracking [smilie=icon_aaargh.gif] )

Renault's book time is to do the job correctly and not cutting corners i.e. bending plastic covers to fit parts, etc.
