Bonnet catch

A good few years ago Renault realised there was an issue with bonnet catches on 98-05 clios, where they would fail and the bonnet fly open whilst driving. I'd nearly forgotten the issue until a friend asked me to check the battery on her 02' Clio this week only to find the catch highly corroded and then would not close properly after we opened it.

If anybody has not already had the catch assembly checked I urge you to do so at your Renault Dealer. Any faulty parts will be replaced under warranty regardless of age/service history- don't take no for an answer from any dealer, Renault UK are well aware of the problem

Id expect as most of the vees are well maintained and low milage there would not be an issue but mine was checked and lubed to extreme a few years ago by a local dealer.

Right I feel better having posted this!

I believe Renault use to check the catch in a service , But for some reason stopped. Thats when they started to fail as the catch was open to the elements and was not greased regulary. So as long as yours has no or very little rust on it , It should be fine. Best to ask though if its a freebee. :)

Yea mine is all good, i just wanted to be sure the other owners on here was aware and got theirs checked too - cheers Jimm

mine failed a couple of months ago with a bonnet/boot full of shopping ( inc frozen stuff ) & a hefty pull on the lever resulted in a cable snap!

had to pay to have it fixed, no offer from Renault to replace the rusty catch or stump up any money for the repair, the only concession was that they only charged for the full job & not the temporary fix whilst they waited for spares to come in to permanently fix the cable

they didn't even mention the catch fault was a known issue with a free fix [smilie=doubt.gif]

If I were you Jim, I'd got back with your receipt and ask for a refund and tell your dealer if they have a problem to contact Renault uk. It's a known problem you should not have had to pay!
