Blown head gasket :-(

Hi All,

I'm fairly certain that the head gasket on

http://www.r5gordini.co.uk/mediawiki/B621_GNJ

is blown...

This car has a 1397cc (automatic!) engine fitted...

Has anyone on here managed to do a head gasket without having to rebuild the whole engine? All the head gaskets I've ever done in the past have needed renewing again after 8K miles! In the end I gave up and got the engine rebuilt.

I'm concerned about liner seals, and there's no easy way of telling if this is the root cause, or whether it's just the head gasket...

Other than this... I'd love to do something crazy and fit another completely different engine to the car as I'm not concerned about originality. Any ideas as to what might fit with not too much bother?

The head gasket should replace OK on these engines. Trick is not to disturb the liner seals.

Leave the bolt near the distributor unturned by 1 turn (take the rest out) and knock the front of the head sideways to unseat it without disturbing the liners. Then don't turn the engine at all until after the head has gone back on.

The head will need a skim and a crack test - it's normally that distorting (through overheating) that causes the head gasket to go.

I've not heard of liner seals failing other than when they have been disturbed after the head has been removed.

Failing all that I'd be up for a 1400 engine if it is ever going spare.
