Best exhaust/back box?

VII Car Care

New Member
Hey guys, after leaving Betty at Scotts this morning im thinking of adding an upgrade on the exhaust system. Which one is best to go for & wheres the cheapest?

cheers

I love my Janspeed too, not got the full system just the backbox. Like woody said got a cracking bark/rasp but nice and quiet (I'd say no louder than standard) when cruising :)

Try janspeed direct dawn, I didn't order mine from them but got some different tail pipes and they were extremely helpful (wasn't keen on the slash cut tips so got some straight ones).

Oh, and around £350 i think :approve:

correct me if im wrong!
dawn im sure the janspeed back box won't fit the phase 2 something to do with the flanges 2hole on the phase 1 and 4 hole on the phase 2 im sure it could be made to fit with some work.

Whatever you get don't get what Shaun has. I heard his on Sunday and it sounds like a cross between that crazy frog moped and someone choking a bagpipe.

Good point there! I'm not sure if you can fit the backbox to a phase 2 without the janspeed manifolds too, hmmm

Cheers Woody, how much & where from? :approve:

Couldn't tell you Dawn. It was fitted when Jay repaired the car after Jackie was shunted at a junction. I'd say Gregg isn't far off the mark on price.

Im sorry James but you are wrong here!!! ;)

Shaun exhaust is bloody amazing!!!!!!!!!!!

Other than Shaun's buy a QS Sports backbox and decat the downpipes :) (AKA known as Stevo's popping and crack firing monster!!!)

I have a Janspeed and feel so lucky that I have to drive through mountain and harbour tunnels everytime I get in the Vee cos Hong Kong has loads of them!

More seriously it wont fit a mark 2 as backbox only per previous post, though do recall another owner did a bit of welding to get it fitted

I've always fancied a QS one, and i wouldn't say im over keen on shauny's one as it is a wee bit loud! ;)

Still love yer Shaun

Chees guys, I'll see how much the bill is from Scott & go from there! I may be left poor! [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Whats shaun got?

I've got a ktec, sounds lovely, but you need the collectors removed to hear it at it's best.

Now then....

I have a full Janspeed with sports cats. and custom tips, which suprisingly seems to make some difference to the sound. Odd, but can't put the difference in sound between mine and others with a slash cut pipe.
Dawn, I had the QS Sports on the Black vee and it was significantly loader at normal driving pace inside the car than this Janspeed. It's quiet driving around normally, and load when I open it up.. Brilliant!

Thanks for the comment Mossy :)

James, you're rubbish. :p

Janspeed full system (inc tubular manifolds) with FULL DECAT is where its at!

Save fuel, more power, more torque, even more pops and bangs! 8)

If your going to light the emissions light (sports cats), you may as well go the whole hog! ;)

Peter

Get the full Trophy "Bad Boy" system like Patchall.........its really REALLY quiet most of the time. ;) ......even comes with cats

Honestly, if I were to go and buy an off the shelf item, it would have to be the full Janspeed system with sport cats and the exact same tailpipes as Shaun. The Lunar sounds absolutly stunning when it flys past. Like no other vee ive heard. Like Shaun says, it must be down to the tailpipes as when Simon had it fitted to his (with bigger tailpipes) it sounded really nice but not like it does now.

I'm no expert, but I have a fairly good understanding of physics. ;) The slope of slash cut tips with the cut facing down will tend to make the car quieter as the noise will radiate backwards and downwards. Lots of normal cars have exhausts pointed down towards the road for exactly this reason (driveby noise regulations). As such for the same size pipe if you have straight cut tips from directly behind the car the zorst will be louder than a downward sloping design in a similar setup. I fancied different tips on mine a while back, but TBH as i plan to do some track time its plenty loud enough as it is. ;)

The noise of the car is greatly affected by the tailpipe size and design, so if Shaun's tail pipes are larger / different shape he will also get a different "note".
