Antifreeze / Coolant Replacement

Am gonna fit my new thermostat soon and this actually ties in with the 4 year service which specifies a 'full' coolant replacement ...

Anyway I checked with Renault and their 'Ethelyne Glycol RX Glaceol Type D' antifreeze is £23.86 for 5 litres, and you need 20 litres ... The parts man said the Renault anti-freeze used to be Red in colour and that he would just buy it from a motor factor and not pay the dealer price ...

So, as is me, I have done some research on anti-freeze and some phoning around ...

Essentially, the same spec 'non dealer' Ethelyne Glycol antifreeze for the Renault V6 is Red and is around £45 for 20 litres. This was confirmed by two separate motor factors looking up the Vee on their catalogues. The colour dyes tend to represent different specifications of anti-freeze and Red means 'long life' with a life-span of upto 5 years as opposed to the typical 2 years for Blue. Red is also recommended for all aluminium engines like the Vee. There is a deal on at my local motor factor where it is currently £36.

Anyway gonna pick it up tomorrow and perhaps do the work over the weekend. Will be keeping receipts as the coolant replacement is on the 4 year service schedule and I want to represent it has been done.

I will post the exact details from the packaging when I buy it.

noticed that my coolent could do with a topup the other day - i've still got 5 litres of renault type C coolant (the green one) in my garage from a previous renault.

Do you know if it would be safe to top up with this or is it significantly different to type D ?

Replaced my Themostat last week. Found it had the green antifreeze in the system. Topped up the system with the red antifreeze. Speaking to an ex engineering REME instructor at work, he mentioned it wouldnt make any difference mixing them.

Hope this helps
