I´ve been a lurker here for some time but i Guess its time to properly introduce myself and my current(long term) project.
As you will soon realise English is not my mother tongue, but as the Norwegian Renault community are pretty Limited and my French is worse than rubbish I often turn to the warious English Forum.
I think my first introduction to Renault were when my father once borrowed a MK1 R5 TL"Le Car". He himself being a VW man had mixed feelings about the car but found it fasinating enough to take his 12year old son for a test drive. We soon realised finding a long enough straight bo bring it up to more than 60mph in our aerea were near impossible. But it was great fun.
By accident 10years later i found a near identical car on offer. Being a student at the time buying a car was not the wisest thing to do but I simply could not resist. I got it cheap but then discovered worn out tyres and a blown head gasket. I had newer worked on a car before but I soon got the hang of it.
With 45bhp under the bonnet it didnt take long before the pedal was planted to the flore most of the time, so when a half finished R5Alpine turbo Conversion project came up on the other side of the country came ut I bought it unseen. It was a Complete basket case. Rust and glass fibre and mould. When I gave up un it I started converting the "Le car" only to find out that the mounting points for the rear suspension was more or less rusted out. Time ran out and I had to scrap both cars. Only the most valuable parts were put on storage.
After that my cars were mostly small Citroen and Peugeots, the favorits being Citroen AXgt`s and a Peugeot 106Rallye 16V that I had for seven years.
A few years ago a fellow French Car entusiast and friend(same age as my dad) started turning to the cars of his youth. First normal R8s With hotted up engines and later R8 Gordini and A110. When I first drove his R8 it was the first time I saw one in the flesh but I were sold. I soon bought a quite tatty -64 R8 1130 only to find the one I have today, also a -64 but a Major the next year.
The plan was and still is to build a fast and drivable car while maintaining the classic apearance.
The parts to build a Volvo B14/R5Alpine is collected. The bottom end being balanced and the head being built by one of the best engine Builders avaliable. It will be mated to a late R10 1300 330 gearbox witch is one of the better ones. I dont plan to become a carb and dizzy specialist so I will use the same aproach as i Used on the 106Rallye; bike bodies and mapable management. To provoke the old guys I have found some Coil On Plugs that fits perfectly.
I have to admit that being a husband and father of tho small boys are making it hard to find time for car projects. Bying a large house With a barn and boat house in warious states of neglect(the boat house being more of a ruin) did not make Things better. The barn have potential to become a quite usable garage and for now at least is a reasonable shelter for the humble R8.
The post will be completed With Pictures in a dau or two.
