1984 Honda VF750F operation big bow

Chris H

master of boobies
Gumtree, its a bad bad place to someone like me. I buy stuff.

I noticed an old ad in the wrong section for another VF750F, I read the ad, moving house needs to go, lots spent non runner £200.

So called him up, arranged to go see it, this was Tuesday. Looked over the bike, saw the new gear on it and haggled him down to £130.

The big sticking point was he has lost the keys and the V5. Hmm not good. I prodded him more and more about things and apparently it is in his name, the stuffs just gone missing in the house move and he was last riding it 2 years ago.

Tuesday night I came home and done a check, apparently its black and the tax was due on the 1st October 1994...

My text check etc couldn't find anything on it.

Also the chassis plate is missing just for giggles. But the stamped number is still by the steering head.

The reason it was taken off the road was the infamous Honda cam chain tensioner, it failed basically mangling the heads. He bought new heads and another bottom end and he just couldn't time the engine properly. Now this may seem a simple job and it is but its very tricky, most can't time the V4 engines so the result is I got a bargain.

New stuff noted so far;

Exhaust cans
chain and sprockets
front and rear tyres
nearside fork slider
carb diaphragms, jets and needles

There is no doubt more.

I also got 3 boxes of stuff, spare parts, parts to be refitted etc etc.

I picked it up tonight, with a full receipt etc from the seller. He also wants me to go visit him on the bike when its done, so he can't be that dodgy.

I just need to get solid confirmation that is legit really, if its not then I'll take the new gear off and hand it in to the authorities.

If this can't go back on the road then the tyres and chain etc will make their way top my CBX. The actual plan is get the bike sorted and give it to my sister to replace her 125.

Anyway onto the pictures

Mocked up

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_white_20vf_2004.webp

The bit on the fuel tank. Sadly after it was painted the previous owner left fuel in it so it leaked round the pet-cock and got behind the paint thus causing it to bubble, I burst the paint to make sure it wasn't holed behind and it isn't.

So first job is to get the V5 etc sorted out, then the engine timed up and go from there.

[BREAK=Got another one]

25th July 2010

Well the other day I got another VF750F and also a VFR400R I will start another report detailing the deal.

Anyway I got a B plate VF750F, black red and white, V5 etc etc, non runner, no tank, no starter and a no clue previous owner.

It doesn't run, it did then stopped and the PO decided to pull it apart to fix it and doesn't have a clue.

So far this bike has given up its exhaust system and horn to now Kevin's red vf.

Anyway back to the white and blue one.

Today after I done other stuff I decided to have a go at the timing.

I set the timing marks to T1-3 and checked the front heads marks, they lined up, here a pic of the front head cam cover removed

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20timing_2001.webp

I then set about timing the rear head which was in bits, after a wee while I got it all lined up

exhaust cam

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20timing_2003.webp

So timed up eventually.

I then done a compression test, cylinders 2 and 4 (front head) both 120PSI right away.

The rear ones were 30 and 70 PSI. Ohh dear not good. I left it for the time being but will have to delve deeper

[BREAK=Bent Valves]

1st August 2010

The other day I got my compression tester hose stuck it in the rear cylinders set each to tdc compression blew through the hose and both cylinders leak air out the exhaust valves.

The previous owner has obviously bent the valves.

Ho hum

Looked at the other bikes engine, the retard previous owner who was a mechanic apparently decided to remove the carbs and stick a towel over the ports, well pulled the plugs and turned the engine over with the back wheel and rusty water came out, oh dear.

As always I have my work cut out and I cannot be bothered having to do serious work, but there's no other option really.

[BREAK=head off]

28th August 2010

Ok this was done about 2 weeks ago, only getting round to an update now, this will be over a few pages as a lots happened.

I'm not sure if i mentioned the plan is sort out the black bike instead of the white one. The white ones engine and other good bits will go on the black bikes frame.

This page will deal with the head coming off.

The engine was pulled out of the white bike and then I set about removing the rear head.

[BREAK=Valve job]

28th August 2010

With the head off it was now time to sort out the cause of the low compression.

When looking through the ports you could see daylight, I was thinking maybe bent valves or seat issues, I was hoping for seat issues - I got lucky for once!

i then done the same on the other cylinder.

The issue was debris and some light corrosion on the valve seats.

Cleaned up leak tested fine so it was time to put it back on the engine and then into a bike.

Now it just needs fitted into the black bikes frame.

[BREAK=New home]

28th August 2010

before fitting the engine I pulled the clutch slave, just as well I did.

nasty!

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_white_20vf_20clutch_20slave_2002.webp

I rebuilt the other one, I will rebuild this one as well, yes I can save it.

I first had to remove the black bikes engine, doing so I found this, the usual regulator wiring problem

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_black_20vf_20regulator_20wiring.webp

The black bikes engine out

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_black_20vf_20original_20engine.webp

Fitting the engine into the frame was a nightmare, eventually I figured the only way I could do it was to lie the bike on its side, this is due to the fact only 1 rail unbolts. No pictures but it wasn't fun.

engine fitted to black and red bike

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_black_20vf_20eng_20in_2002.webp

I then stripped and rebuilt the carbs repaired the linkages etc etc.

So did it start first try?

Nope.

After ages of messing about eventually I was sure it was an ignition issue. So Soneji, Kevin and myself went up to Kevins and had a look at his bike.

The coils were different to both my bikes.

I tried it his way and with Soneji supplying fuel from a lucozade bottle, Kevin working the starter button and me working the choke and throttle cable when I figured out the coil connections were reversed inside the timing pick ups it started up no bother. very loud as there is no exhaust fitted to it yet.

I ordered new exhaust seals but the wrong ones were supplied, the right ones will be posted to me on Tuesday apparently.

So jobs left.

Side cover gasket
exhaust system
cooling system
swap forks over from white bike
sort out drivers side handle bar switch (another big drama)

and that should be it ready to MOT.

[BREAK=Nearly there]

1st September 2010

Well sorted out the switch gear, I also had to do a bit of wiring work as well, but everything electrical appears to work.

This pic shows switch gear, dash and mirrors all fitted up

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20black_20coming_20together.webp

I also swapped the forks over from the white bike which left the white bike looking sad

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_white_20vf_20stripped.webp

Don't worry I put the other forks back on it.

I had an issue with the fuel tank, I had no key for it. However a lock is a simple device, I will not be beaten by a simple device. So I picked the lock.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20tank_2001.webp

I have another cap with key so that's sorted.

However opening the tank and poking about revealed the age old problem. The tank is rotten.

So I sanded it back and chemical metal repaired it, it was quite bad

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20tank_2002.webp

The silver is liquid metal epoxy, its very good to work with

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20tank_2003.webp

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20tank_2004.webp

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20tank_2005.webp

Tomorrow I will check its fuel tightness and also try and wash it out as best I can.

There were lots of holes, some were a decent size but I coated screws in epoxy screwed them in then covered them over, should be a solid repair.

I will look into another tank, but these temp repairs often end up as permanent repairs. I'll give it a quick blow over in black paint or something as well.

Waiting on the exhaust gaskets still and I have to seal up the side cover, then its ready for the MOT.

[BREAK=big update]

21st September 2010

Well been a while since this was updated.

took it for the mot failed on headlight alignment and 2 tyre valves.

Sorted therm out and it passed.

issues noted though.

radiator fans didn't kick in, misfire and it cut out at junctions etc.

This was a nightmare.

Also got a tax disc the day it passed the mot fitted it went out stopped tax disc and front bit of holder gone! I was a bit pissed about that, especially as its 7 quid for a replacement.

First job was the fans, after looking at the wiring I saw that the ignition barrel whilst the keys all matched it was missing a wire, this was the live feed for the fans. So I wired it permanently to live. This means that if the engine is turned off with the fan running it will continue to run until it cools enough then turn off. It cycles in and out as its supposed to do.

I adjusted the carbs and even pulled them out again improved the running a bit then found an HT lead that shorted to the frame occasionally. This seeme3d to sort it, took it out on a long run 2 Saturdays back and it acted up, then wouldn't start when got. Had to push start it.

So i was on the bike Darren and Emma push stared me and I proceeded off to where we arranged to meet. the bike cut out and I waited. And waited.

Called them no answer, called my mum told her where i was and waited more.

I then tried to bump start it myself no joy.

I walked home. I walked all 11 miles home in my motorbike boots, my feet are still damaged from it.

Anyway the next day my sister got it back.

The bike then no longer worked the starter, push the button the solenoid would click that's all. Battery fine, direct shorting no difference, pull it off and strip it that's my remedy.

So starter off and pulled apart. This is inside the back of it where the brushes are

t_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20starter_2001.webp

more dust you can see the needle bearings for the nose of it

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20starter_2007.webp

I cleaned it all out, so it was clean but needed a brush pack. Online 30 quid.

However I have a spare starter for the CBX, I pulled it apart, same brush pack. Fitted it and we are in business for free.

Started up but the tank decided to leak! the chemical metal repair on 1 side decided to leak. So still sorting that out.

I want to sort out the earthing its always an issue on bikes. There is a main earth from the battery to the engine then the rest of the loom is earthed here

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20earths_2001.webp

this shows the battery to engine earth

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20earths_2002.webp

I have added another from the battery direct to the frames earth and will add another healthier earth to the engine. Also to the lights as the single headlight is far poorer than my CBX twin set up.

I am not happy about the occasional misfire though, I think its ignition related. So I will make up new HT leads and fit new plugs. The coils are ok (when cold anyway) and it stays running even when hot so I think an HT lead is still shorting out or there's a dodgy plug cap.

Since the bike is back here and after riding it I don't like the back end, the damping is poor. So I decided to get the other shocker from the other bike drain it and fill with fresh oil.

So i removed the air pipe and let it drain into a 600 ml pepsi bottle, there is supposed to be 300cc's of oil in the shocker, only 200 odd came out. the oil was dirty and had sediment in it, it also wasn't ATF either. this is the old oil next to the fresh ATF 300 cc's worth.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20rear_20shock_20oil_2001.webp

To refill you have to either inject it or pour it in, I don;t have a big syringe so I had to pour it. I heated up the oil so it would pour easier

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20rear_20shock_20oil_2002.webp

I then had to wobble it about to get the oil in and air out, it took about 25 mins to fill it

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20rear_20shock_20oil_2005.webp

This is the gaiter, clip and air hose

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20rear_20shock_20oil_2003.webp

The bottom of the shock where the gaiter goes, its a Showa shock and you can see how short the stroke is thanks to the linkages, this is less damaging to the oil etc

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20rear_20shock_20oil_2004.webp

I also knocked the pin out and cleaned up the top bushing, the pin rotates freely now.

i will fit this tomorrow hopefully and this should improve the back end no end.

Other plans for tomorrow are to balance the carbs and sort out the fuel tank again.

[BREAK=New Plugs]

22nd September 2010

Well went out bought new plugs NGK DPR8EA - 9's. Came back removed the old plugs and checked out the HT leads.

One had a dicky cap so pulled it apart put it back together and it had continuity again there was a touch of rust and it wasn't tightened right.

Anyway 3 NGk's came out and 1 Denso. The NGK's all fine the Denso, well the pics speak for themselves

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20plugs_2001.webp

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20plugs_2002.webp

Have to pull the top rad to get the front plugs, well you don't if you have small hands, I don't so rad off

new plugs, there's another 2 of course

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20plugs_2004.webp

Old plugs 3 ok and 1 sooty black not working right Denso

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20plugs_2005.webp

I reset the pilot adjustments to 2 1/2 turns out, primed the carbs, choke on hit the button and it burst into a nice smooth idle. Best its ever done.

let it run for a few minutes then was going to do a carb synch.

tried the starter button and nothing, just a clicking solenoid.

So I figure the worn segments on the commutator have probably worn through as that's just my luck.

So I go to the spare motor I pulled the brushes out of. this of course doesn't have the end bearing etc fitted but I figure I could make it work. So pull it out give the commutator a wipe and the coppers worn through! Dammit.

So I need to look for another starter or see about getting this one sorted.

of course I need to pull it out again to make sure that's what the problem is, I'm certain it is as it looked very worn when I put it back in and tbh the cleaning I done and the few times its started since probably finished it off.

Means I have to remove the lower fairing, lower radiator and so on though and its been pouring down all day.

but such is life, also gotta fix the tank - again!

[BREAK=new starter and misc]

8th October 2010

Updates, as before I mentioned I swapped the rear damper, here is some pictures of the task.

This is the top damper bolt. I have the coolant bottle removed so it can be accessed and removed

This is the bottom looking up. This is the pro link linkage where the linkage attaches to the frame, swing arm and the mono shock.

The 2 units side by side, the one with the silver over spray went on the bike

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20rear_20damper_20change_2003.webp

I also swapped over the fuel pump and fuel lines form the other bike, this meant a new fuel filter was required as the one on it as you can see is in a bad state.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20fuel_20filter_2001.webp

This is just a universal fuel filter, a couple of £ from the factors

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20fuel_20filter_2002.webp

However it was a big bigger than the old filter and the old filter showed signs of crushing to fit

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20fuel_20filter_2003.webp

So I just filled the slot open so it would accept the wider filter and here we are

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20fuel_20filter_2004.webp

I also got another starter off of ebay. its for a VFR, I had no idea if it was the same, I looked at pictures of it, looked close, took a chance and it fitted. It sounds horrible though. I took the old one apart, I found out why it stopped working. It seems I was too generous with the lubing of the end bearing. cleaned the grease off and it worked again. Typical. But I needed another start for the other engine.

I was also let down with another tank. So I borrowed the tank from Kevins VF since he came off it twice and its not getting used.

So I have it on this bike, looks good I think.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20red_20fuel_20tank.webp

I also got a replacement tax disc which you can see in the picture.

[BREAK=Update]

23rd February 2011

Well the other day we were out and at the petrol station we had to push start it, this was to be expected as it sat since last year unused over the winter, so today I went and got it, started no bother btw and charged the battery up for an hour or so.

Since I had it there I done a few other things that needed done. i had to sort out the ballast for the LED indicators, by ballast I mean 55 watt headlight bulbs  I wired them in better and put them in their heat-sinks better.

The indicators now flash at the correct rate again.

I then looked for where I wanted to hook up an earth lead i put in ages ago but never connected, the dash display I decided was the place to do it. Onto the rev counters earth (this earth joins a hub for all the other earth's).

This picture shows the wire to the tacho unscrewed and hanging free

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_emma_20vf_20dash_20earth_2001.webp

This picture shows it back on and with the much thicker new earth wire connected

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_emma_20vf_20dash_20earth_2002.webp

End result of this is the tacho seems smoother and the lights etc are brighter and don't flicker any more.

Nice bright neutral light, idling nicely and the tacho is more stable, mileage is now 21,329 miles.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_emma_20vf_20dash_2023_20feb_2011.webp

I also bought the correct colour scheme tank for the bike last year, its been on a while now but this is the first picture I have taken of it. Sets the bike off lovely. Looks great in this picture but it needs painted, there's rusty scabs on the outside of it mainly on the top black section.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_emma_20vf_20correct_20tank.webp

Emma was complaining of the gear change, and it is pretty poor, I thought maybe a clutch bleed would help, nope, the slave is also working perfectly. So the clutch might be done or its just the crap gearbox on it. This engine and box is not this frames original unit remember.

I also need to sort out the oil leak from the water pump but the O ring is proving to be tricky to source.

[BREAK=Oil, filter and water pump]

10th April 2011

Emma came round and had some spare time so we tackled the oil leak from the water pump.

First job was to drain the sump, this wasn't needed to do the water pump leak but I felt the engine wouldn't mind an oil change.

Then drained the coolant out.

Now I didn't have the camera so this is back to front picture wise. This is the water pump removed from the engine, you can see the drive slot. the oil was leaking out of the stub as you can see from the shiny area.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_vf_20water_20pump_2001.webp

The pump itself, the leak was around that O ring so the solution was some silicone sealant. After of course thoroughly cleaning it. Honda wanted silly money for the O ring so cleaned the old one up and re-used it.

Next job was to change the oil filter, the original small Honda motorcycle filter

Then it was a case of adding fresh oil and coolant.

It seemed slightly sweeter for the new oil which wasn't expected, Emma noticed it so it must have been a real change.

Also the oil leak has stopped. which is great.

[BREAK=Big update]

17th August 2012

Its been 18 months roughly since this was updated and a lot has happened.

First the engine spun a bearing, at a sustained 115 no less, my sister was riding it trying to keep up with me it started sounding funny and she pulled the clutch in. And that was it.

Got it home put the other engine in it and away we go.

Then it started acting up, the fuel tank was dropping small bits of rust etc and clogging the carbs.

Tank was taken off and filled with vinegar which removed the rust and also made some holes. So they were sorted and it was fine.

Then last July someone decided to ram her knock her off then drive away. I was ahead of her and never saw what happened I thought she fell for whatever reason. It was her and witnesses that told me she had been rammed and the guy drove off. Of course never caught him and claiming from the MIB was going to cost about a grand so it was left. I would have pushed for it but she left it.

Here is a picture of the bike

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_100_5654.webp

Damage is damaged fairings, broken indicators, bent brake lever, exhaust can, screen, mirror and blah blah, worked out to be over a grand in damages.

I used bits off the white spare bike to sort it out and have it road legal again.

She rode it once more, I mot'd it and its sat ever since. A few weeks back I went round started it and brought it here.

The mot is up on the 5th of September and for it to pass I need to repair the fork seals, which I will do asap. The tax is up at the end of the month.

Shame the bikes not been used at all for a whole year basically. I rode it about 50 miles before I actually brought it home. Was fine aside from the front end due to the fork seals

As for the original white bike, well thats now gone - pretty much.

Being fed up of stuff lying about I have decided I want to reduce my fleet, one household of 2 adults doesn't need 4 cars or 6 motorbikes.

So the cull began with the White A plate VF750f. After the other engine spun a bearing I knew I wouldn't get this on the road again, I couldn't be bothered dealing with idiots so never tried to sell it. Instead I added it to a scrap run I was doing.

Here it is beside the VFR400, before it met its doom.

I then moved it out took off spares I wanted to keep for the black and red bike etc. Then I pulled out my favourite tool, the petrol disc cutter.

Chop chop

Shame to cut up a bike but tbh it was too far gone, it needed lots of money thrown at it and I wanted it gone more than anything. So it got weighed in with other stuff.

Still I like cutting things up so that was fun.

So there is one VF left and a load of spares. Emma wants to sell the black and red one as she hasn't used it in a year and doubts she will ever bother riding again.

So the plan was for me to have the black and red bikes fork seals done, mot'd and up for sale but I just haven't had the time. The main issue is if I don't get it done asap the tax will run out and there insurance etc is not being renewed.

[BREAK=MOT'd and up for sale]

29th August 2012

For the MOT I had to repair the fork seals, a delightful job. I had to repair some chips on the stanchions. I also had another set of forks which were better so just stripped and rebuilt them.

2 stripped forks in a tub, not much to them

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_red_20vf_20fork_20seals_2001.webp

The bike, hmm, need to get those out of there...

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_red_20vf_20fork_20seals_2002.webp

Using my mind alone to levitate the front of the bike I removed the wheel

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_red_20vf_20fork_20seals_2003.webp

Still focusing my mind to levitate the bike I removed one of the sliders

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_red_20vf_20fork_20seals_2004.webp

And skipping ahead quite a bit basically the forks and wheel were back on so it was time to fill up with oil. Right leg 350ml left leg 375ml.

And you pour in here

Most modern bikes you don't get a quantity measurement but a level from the top.

I also took the cap from my spare CBX fork and put it on this bike to complete it.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_red_20vf_20fork_20seals_2007.webp

So that was it now ready for the MOT. On Saturday the 25th August I took it down and it passed, sailed through. It got an advisory on the rear tyre being close to the legal limit but he was being overly cautious. It was a full long ridiculous MOT. He checked the oil, the coolant level etc (even though as far as I know he's not supposed to). But it sailed through anyway. He asked if it was for sale I said yes. He took my number and said if its still available nearer Christmas he'll be interested. Weird I thought and I hope its long gone by Christmas.

So with the MOT done all thats left is to tidy it up and get it up for sale which I did.

I pulled the tank, saddle, side panel, battery and tray out and done a lot of masking. I also of course sanded all the rust away. Then I sprayed some silver I took a lucky guess with at Halfords.

Turned out pretty good, you can't even see where the petrol leak had stripped the paint off anymore.

www.renault_turbo.com_chris_white_20vf750f_red_20vf_20frame_20touch_20up_2002.webp

I then touched up the chips on the paint on the tank and the very few small chips on the fairings then took it down near the cemetery for some quiet pictures.

Looks pretty good. Its a nice bike and if I only had 1 other bike I would keep it but I have no need for 3 bikes and 3 sets of road tax and insurance etc.

So its up for sale including all the spares for £795 which when you look about is a bargain. There is some real garbage 125's etc out there for more money in really poor nick.

Yeah I have sort sort of disease or something. Another update and there is another report about to be started.

no I knew when I was typing that would be the answer, and i've yet to satisify myself on which colour i'd replace it with.

love the boxy/smooth shape to it however..

you going to strip rebuild or try to get different lumps?

till the rest of it rots out.

Its pretty much done now, took it round the block earlier.

To do list, free off the front brake calipers, got a small weep from the fuel tank, got an air leak on number 2 cylinders carb rubber and need to sort out a rear reflector.

11 miles in motorbike boots

I once did probably about that much in my SPD shoes when I snapped my frame halfway round a Welsh trail centre, wasn't fun.

yep 11 miles, well 10.9, i checked it with the car to see how far i walked.

i could have got a taxi or even public transport but i was raging. i would have beaten someone to death on a bus or train.

I also stopped a couple of times and the pain in my feet made me trudge on.

Its shitty. Also the boots soles have worn a fair bit, not designed for walking obviously!

Another update.
