#196 full underside restoration

Tannman

New Member
Over the last 2 months [v6plaque]196[/v6plaque] has undergone a full underside restoration.......still not finished.

First off I purchased a scissor lift to make things a little easier for the restoration. I removed all the steering and suspension including brakes also the subframes was removed with the engine and gearbox a full cambelt kit, water pump, aux belt kit, starter motor and slave cylinder will be replaced before refitting.

All the steering and suspension components have been soda blasted back to metal before painting back to OE colour. With the brake calipers I decided to spray paint mat black as near to original, I understand these wasn't painted from factory butt personally I think it looks better. New pads and discs will be fitted all round as with new genuine flexi brake pipes.

There was one problem whilst stripping there was a tiny pin hole in the driveshaft gaitor to which Renault didn't do a gaitor kit on its own for it but as I work for renault I managed to find a alternative part for it to which it fits and looks original, that was my main concern.

The subframes have been galvanised.

The nuts, bolts and brackets have been dipped in acid then finished to either zinc colour, zinc clear, zinc black and chrome as they were from factory. Some components have been polished.

I'm currently removing the excess underseal but I'm in 2 minds to remove all the underseal. Your input on this would be much appreciated?

More pics and update to follow.

Thanks

Cracking stuff!

Would love to see a photograph of the underside once you are done. How many person-hours do you estimate all this will take?

I hope that you have galvanised the subframes!! act as sacrificial anodes for the rest of the car!! Brilliant work though :approve:

Yes the subframes have been galvanised!

The metal polishers that done my bolts were brill they even said if I'd need more done just bring them to them.

The longest and hardest part was preparing the components for paint.

A labour of love I'm sure!! [mention=719,#000000]Chris V6[/mention] did a similar thing with his illiad a few years back.

Personally id remove excess underseal but leave the bulk of it on.

I hope it doesn't put you off using it once its all done :approve:

Beautiful! ;)

Did you polish the alloy rear arms, they look to have a near mirror finish now.
Who did you use to galvanise the subframes. Cracking attention to detail. [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

Thanks :approve:

Yes the arms have been polished and have turned out rather well.

I used local galvanisers near me in bridgend s.wales.

I have to say, IMHO, that this looks super impressive in terms of restorative maintenance before it is really needed and so lifts the car into the top of the 'desirable' pile :approve:

That is going to look stunning. I would get the excess underseal off but apply new stuff around the bodywork underneath. There are some great underbody treatment products from Dynatrol and Waxoil which have been used on classics for many years, and it really does work. Looking at my Phase 2 underneath when the cambelt was done, the factory applied very little underseal in the right places, preferring to spray the subframes and plastic bits! It doesn't matter too much if you don't use the car in the winter, but as you have it all apart, it's got to be worth while doing it all properly.

The decision has been made and I have removed all the underseal from the underside and have been painted the same colour as the car titanium 647.

I purchased new air con pipe clamp clips as these was covered in underseal and a new mounting bracket was made as the old one was rotten.

This past week iv been rebuilding the front suspension and I'm pretty happy the way it's coming along [smilie=yay.gif]

The wheel arches and underside have been repainted titanium silver. The back wheel arches have been repainted original black.
