As it seems we have a lot of newcomers here now, and even some longer serving members seem unsure..... A bit about WSR. This is an update of last years article, just bare in mind that this years collectors area, and Gala may or may not take the same format as in previous years.
What is WSR?
It stands for World Series by Renault. This is a european wide race series marketed by and exclusively for Renault race cars. The British round this year will be at Silverstone having somewhat outgrown Donington where it was held in the past. This will be on July 4th and 5th.
Most meetings include the following races.
World Series (or Formula Renault 3.5): These are the fast, noisy, specatcular single seaters:
The cars are pretty much the same as those in GP2 and just to demonstrate that this can be one stop behind F1; less than two years ago, Sebastian Vettel was racing in this series and Robert Kubica graduated to FI from here. They have a sprint race and a longer race which includes pit stops.
Formula Renault 2.0: Smaller single seaters another rung down the ladder, just to drop 2 names here. Riakonnen and Hamilton are former champions...and yes I do mean Lewis!
Megane trophy: Absolutley bonkers Megane racing series that has evolved from the Clio V6 trophy series. Mid engine, V6 look alike Meganes, only Renault could do it and this year its the new shape Megane competing for the first time and yes it looks a whole heap better than the road version!
Clio Cup: Exactly as it says, if you have never seen the Clio cup then make sure you come, often 3 wheeling through the turns and will probably be the most exciting race of the day.
Most will have 2 races, one on Saturday and one on Sunday so if you can only do one day, you wont miss anything.
What else is there?
Renault usually bring along plenty of their older race and rally cars for the occasion, Expect to see demo laps from the older F1 cars, Le mans winners and the 5 turbo rally cars. Usually driven by a host of star drives such as Rene Arnoux, Erik Comas and Jean Ragnotti.
The paddock area is normally open to the public so you can wander around the between races taking in the atmosphere of the whole event.
ING Formula 1 car:
Often the highlight for a lot of people, High speed demonstration laps of the current (ok maybe last years or a test car) F1 car, if you have never experienced this then you are in for a treat, bring your ear plugs.......
Kids stuff
Usually a free fun fair, sims and other stuff going on.
road cars
Lets face it, this is about selling cars so Renault are planning to have the entire range on display.
How much does it cost?
Entry is free! But you must apply for the free tickets at either your local Renault dealer or direct from:
http://www.worldseriesbyrenault.com/silverstone/uk/ probably from about April onwards. But read the next bit before rushing to get your tickets.....
But, it gets beter.....
collectors area
Renault love to show off their sporting and heritage cars as well as rewarding those who appreciate their Renaults and love to show them off. At the WSR event there is an area reserved just for these cars where you can park with others, usually arranged by model. Last year we were located on the main straight of the unused National circuit, right next to all the attractions and race paddock. Looks as though the traditional track parade of collectors car is a thing of the past, it was always a hassle to organise and fit in around the racing timetable but whatever the reason, the organisers have canned it for now.
There is a small charge for the collectors area, £10 for the whole weekend which is basicly just to cover admin. And although you can come for either or both days, you will have to arrive early (before 9.30 but times TBA) and you may have to stay all day (you will want to anyway!)
You will need to pre register for this though, there will be no entry to the collectors area on the day without the nessesary pass. The Renault Alpine Owners Club (RAOC) look after this and the registration details will be posted here when available.
And if it couldnt get any better.....
gala evening
On the Saturday evening, Renault will hold their gala evening- top notch dinner, prize giving, and, enough wine and beer to keep most of us happy. Tickets for this are extra, (price TBA) and are limited. Pre reserve your ticket when you register.
