Hi all just just recently changed piston and liner and after building engine up it wont start ive got 100 psi on all cylinders and got spark ive tried 2 sets of plugs dizzy and roter arm are nearly new. when engine turns it doesn't even attempt to fire i taken top carb lobster off its wet through with petrol and it some times chucks smoke out when trying to start. ive built many enigines and had 5,s for about 15 years this one has got me scratching my head any suggestions.

correct me if im wrong but when you get the TDC mark on fly wheel lined up with gear box does the rotor arm point to the rad.?
I never use the gearbox lines as the casting tend to be out.

Whip number one plug out ( 1st next to flywheel ) and then use a screwdriver to work out where TDC is .

You are correct on the orientation though.

Does it cough , bang and fart when you are trying to start it up ? Any chance you could have the dizzy 180 degrees out ?

ive not tried that andy because its the same as ive always had it but im going to try it anyway im clutching straws now.
Your timing is wrong. The chuffing back up the carb choke is air/fuel being shoved the wrong way. Do what Andy says and get No1 piston to TDC, then check the rotor is pointing to the contact for number 1 cylinder.
Did you remove the cam chain at all?

Hi there DaveL485 i have not removed timing chain the only thing ive done is remove the head and sump to change the piston and liner i did have the dizzy out but positive it went back in the same way just a question with out sounding thick what do you mean by rotor pionting to contact ?. i thought it had to piont to the rad.

100psi across the cylinders sounds low, assuming you haven't fitted some ridiculously hot cam? Was that measuring dry or wet? It should still fire up on that though...

Assuming HT leads are correct placement, dizzy gear/timing sounds out to me too.
