Which starter motor ?

V6veteran

From the number of posts on this it seems we need some advice from the experts who have actually fitted new starter motors to V6s. The question is simple: what starter motors are compatible with phase 1 or phase 2 models (and still available!) and what are considered the best ones of these?

I have just joined the 'starter motor failure club' and like a lot of others was advised by the garage to replace the battery - I now have 2 excellent batteries and a smart battery charger, but the engine hardly turned on starting and was sluggish to start even when engine warm - than yesterday, nothing at all - just a terminal click!

I see that of the starter motors discussed in the posts, some get the thumbs down - I have come up with this one (Lucas - see pic) and someone else mentioned Bosch, but no part number.

Thanks

Will post a pic of my new front coil springs which are good - thanks for all the advice received on that topic.

I hate all things bosch but went for that in 2016 as had bolt in magnets and they do get alot of heat soak/build up.
Checked invoice and sadly no part number etc, but was £188 exchange.
I guess glue technology has moved on since 2004, but i didnt want to risk it with a unit where magnets are glued in, so that after heat and time cycles glue breaks down and magnets are free to roam.

Thanks SJ - I see you have a phase 2 so should be ok for me as well. Yours starter motor must be into its second year - is it behaving itself and still lively? I'll follow this up at my local garage which happens to be Bosch to see if I can track it down.

My local garage cannot trace Bosch starter motor but have come up with the Lucas one I found, so guess this may have to be the one, unless someone on the forum can come up with another one they have actually installed in a 255 and is working well.

The starter is still perfect, it is so much more lively than oe, it was Steve Plain, the Sheffield based V6 specialist that sourced mine, maybe worth giving him a ring.
