preRS Clio Which diesel engine is best

Hi all.
Looking to do a transplant in the clio i have. was looking at b18ft. f4r. f7p. Then i remembered how much i loved my diesel 306.
So im aware there are 1.5dci clios and 1.9dci. but are they actually any good. are they tuneable?
Ive seen the newer diesels can get over 200hp. but id be happy with something like 150 in the clio. with 50mpg obviously.
Cheers
Mark

The latest 2.0 diesels are jointly developed with Nissaan and used in the Infinitys. Easy 200bhp and 350 bhp. The last generation 1.9s are the same as in the Astras I believe and respond well to tuning. Not sure if either of these engines will be very straight forward to fit. The 1.5 can be tuned too but its always going to be limited as its only 1.5. I think they may have used a 1.9 in earlier Clios but will be a low tech engine and not turbo charged if I remember rightly.

You could probably squeeze 150 bhp at of a 1.5 dci but would need alot more than a remap and I doubt there's much on the shelf , a F4R would do 40mpg with the right gearing.

The newest engines will be out of my price range. but the 1.9dci sounds interesting. there is also a 2.2 dci but i have not heard good news about these.
Fitment wise i think most of them should fit. theyre all very similar to the jb gearboxes

In small light hatches I am not sold on derv tbh....derv have their place but loads of low down torque and short powerband in light cars kind of misses the point Imo

Budget and what you can do without paying others of course plays its part but a modern performance petrol engine in light cars returns brilliant mpg

The audi S3 spec tfsi I put into the vx220 at just shy of 400bhp on a std petrol manual box will return 52mpg on a steady motorway run.

With the settings turned down I have no doubt it would be even more frugal

Go for the lesser spec'd golf tfsi and would be even more

As its a turbo engine you still get low down torque but some revs also

My experience of the 1.5dci would never touch one again

Anything different and non normal route gets my vote.....even if its on the fuel of satan lol

cheers for the input guys.
what was wrong with the 1.5dci?
my budget is around 400 tops. im looking at spares repairs cars. That way i get everything i need.
there is also one more option but im holding it off as it will be a true fabrication to get it in. it would be worth it though.

1.5dci unit seems to have issues and maybe I was unlucky. Turbo, oil consumption amongst other woes. Spent more time rebuilding it than getting Tue great mpg it delivered when working

I believe so matey, look here & click on the link for N7Q - you will be directed to Volvo Modular Engine Wiki page

Renault Laguna - Wikipedia

Legend tells of a legendary Volvo 480 with a T4 lump installed. So if a B18FT fits in where a T4 engine will sit...I am thinking maybe the same can be said for the Clio. Doubt it will get 50 mpg though :)...although there were LPT versions of the same engine
