What rear speaker type & grill / cover on phase 1 Vee

Ren5Clio

Hi all. Anybody out there got a picture of their original factory rear speakers / covers in their Phase 1 Vee ? or can anyone describe them please ? I'm presuming they used front door speakers in the rear as well with some kind of plastic grill to protect them ?

Hi, I went and took these for you hopefully they will help:

As you can hopefully see in the last picture the grill has a rubber seal around the outside of it. In hindsight I probably should have measured the speakers while I had the cover off for you but I forgot to, sorry. If it's of any use the grill measures 15cm.

Hi Will. Ahhh that's awesome, great pictures [smilie=yay.gif]

And those are factory originals ?

What colour is the grill & outer rubber edge / seal ?

Hi, i'm glad the pictures are useful. As far as I know they are the original speakers/grill, everything else in the car related to the sound system is OEM. I guess I would describe the grill as satin or semi gloss black, the rubber seal too. They look grey in the first picture but I think that was just because of the LED torch I was using to illuminate them and the fact it was taken on a phone. The grill itself is made of metal rather than plastic.

Unless you can find a V6 being broken for spares I think you're going to struggle to replace whatever you currently have with something that exactly matches the originals. I'd keep an eye out on Leboncoin as well as quite a few obscure parts seem to appear on there: LINK

Hi Will. Yes very useful pictures. Yes i will struggle to find the originals but you've helped to pin point what i need to look for in aftermarket speakers / grills. I'm sure i can find something that looks very close, it's a generic looking grill. But if you do come across the originals feel free to buy them as i'll buy them off you no problem.

Please could you do me another couple of favours with regards to pictures ? could you take a picture of one of the door speakers with the blue plastic speaker trim removed as i'm also trying to find out the design of the factory original front speakers as mine were aftermarket & didn't fit properly.

And... could you take a picture of the type of bolts / nuts / washers you have holding your exterior fibre glass door panel extension on at the front & rear edges of the door ? You probably know but there are 2 M6 bolts & large washers at the rear edge, & at the front hinged edge there is 1 M6 bolt with washer at the top & some type of nut with washer at the bottom. If yours are all original it would be great to know exactly what they used in the factory as i want to get it original as possible.

Your help is really appreciated [smilie=thanks.gif] :race:

Kindest regards, Jules.

I'll try and get a picture of the front speakers for you but I can't make any promises as unlike the rear speakers I don't know how the trim piece that covers them is attached so I'm not sure how difficult it is to remove and I don't want to do any damage to them trying. I'll also try to have a look at the door fixings you mention.

I've had plenty of help with questions I've asked on here over the years so it's nice to be able to offer some assistance to another Phase 1 owner.

Yes it's nice to be able to share info & ideas, it's a great forum for all that. We all need to give help & advise where needed with these rare & very quirky cars.

It's really easy to remove the front trim panels.... there are 2 tabs at the bottom that you can see from underneath.... just gently push in & pull each one with a flat blade screwdriver & the trim panel just lifts off, two two tabs just tuck in a the top.

You're right the trim is easy to remove :approve: :

As you can see the front speaker is different to the rears. The outer plastic measures 13cm and the speaker itself is just a bit smaller so I guess it's 12.7cm/5 Inches.

The first 3 visible door fixings are M6 bolts as you say, with a washer too. I'm assuming they are the original ones. They were a bit manky so I took them off and gave them a quick wire brush and coat of black paint whilst I was there. I'm not sure if it matches the original finish but it looks a lot better than before and only took a few minutes:

I didn't see the point in taking a picture of all of them and then uploading them as they are all the same.

Whilst they were off I measured the bolts and found these online which match the specifications exactly: LINK
I've no idea who the company selling them are or how reputable they are I'm just using this site as an example as it has all the correct details nicely listed.

This is the nut and washer at the bottom of the door by the hinges:

I didn't want to remove this as it was better condition than the other fixings and I didn't want to risk snapping anything off, a 10mm socket fits it though.

Hopefully that is all useful to you too. :approve:

Hi Will.

Yes this is very useful & great info, thank you.

I have the same M6 dome head nut by the hinge so that's good.

Nice work cleaning up the bolts, looks good & very satisfying eh :approve:

My car has coloured zinc (gold) hex headed bolts fitted so are different to yours but it would make sense that they would fit the same as your ones as they are socket button heads & look much neater then hex heads.

Also the speaker pics are great, i was hoping that the ones you have would be the ones fitted so that's good news.

Had at a look at those black socket button heads you've bought, correct type yes but make sure you give them a regular wipe with some WD40 as if left dry they will get surface rust on them as they will only have a chemical black finish.

Thanks again for all your help & pictures, really appreciated.

If you need any tech advise in the future feel free to get in touch, I'm a race car engineer by trade & i've had the whole front of my V6 apart & lot's of the rear too so i know the cars reasonably well.

Kindest regards

Jules.

Happy to help, glad it's answered some of your questions.

I haven't ordered any yet as the quick lick of paint should do the trick for now, but If I do get some I will certainly bear that in mind :approve: .

A better bet might be to get some in bright zinc plate (silver) finish (washers as well), they may well have been the bright zinc finish from the factory as that was very much the general finish for the Renault bolts (would also match your silver paint colour). Also coloured zinc (gold) was another general finish they used a lot.
