What have you done to your Retro Renault today?

Bled the brakes on the supervan.not biting right so il have to bung in a new set of pads.wrung the drivers side bleed nipple off.cursed it to high heaven.it'll do for now till the next time i need to bleed them.might wash it if it passes the test.

friday night slapped on one of the new tyres so I could put the spare away and not suffer the shame of looking totally council with a single steelie on it.

Fitted new front pads on the supervan this evening.less than 15 mins between parking up,fitting them and taking a test drive.that also included an argument with the missus about the bro-in- laws missing dog.LOL.

Supervan passed the DOE this morning.was a bit worried about the brakes being bedded in enough but the fella said he'd do what he could to get it through.

Rear wheels sanded filled painted and lacquered...turned out really well for a home jobby.Just a bit of patience over a couple of days.Well chuffed, now for the front which were on first name terms with kerbs thanks to the previous wally groan regs Sc

Cooling system tip: put a neodymium magnet (the kind that can be salvaged from an old hard-drive) into the coolant expansion bottle. Fish it out every month or so, clean-off the debris, and replace. I've been doing this for a couple of years, and the coolant has remained crystal-clear.

Of course, this is not a substitute for flushing, but you might be surprised at the amount of debris the magnet will remove from an otherwise clean system.

Replaced the cat with a spare. Initially tried to remove the cat by itself, but the bolts on the front union were having none of it, so I had to remove the cat and the down pipe together and cut through the bolts. Slightly worried that there was no hint of any rattle.

The union plate on the down pipe was very crusty, but seemed to clean up ok.

Put it all back together, using new gaskets either end of the cat. Unfortunately, there is a slight blow from the front union, so I guess that plate isn't as flat as I hoped.

Happily, a short test drive proved that the awful rattling no longer happens. A closer look a the old cat revealed two loose pieces of waddling floating around inside. I have to assume that the core is no longer being held in place properly, and the rattle is the result.

Also managed to confirm that the inner gaiter on the offside drive shaft is split.

Wheels done..top job with a bit of care tbh...........calipers sanded and painted next and only the discs remain. Any shouts on where/ wot to buy on the disc fronts...so much on offer cheers Sc

Hi guyd, I had the same problem with blowing at the downpipe flange when I replaced the cat on my 19.

Corrosion had thinned the flange, and as a result, it bent slightly when the bolts were tightened. My solution was to hammer and file the mating surface flat, then weld a collar onto the other side of the flange (around the pipe) to restore rigidity.

The flange is very corroded, so I guess I have the same problem. I had hoped to replace the down pipe, but cannot find another like the one already fitted. As I've said elsewhere, the existing pipe has a single bore, whereas all suppliers say it should be made up of two separate pipes. In order to fit such a pipe, I would need a new heat shield, and these are not available.

I did wonder if a snug fitting crush washer might seal the joint.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the exhaust suppliers have bad data. The only one that listed parts for the 19 16v supplied me with the wrong cat twice, I only managed to get the right one after spending considerable time going through their paper catalogue!

A crush-washer might work short-term (I tried something similar - lasted a week, bending the flange even more), but unless you can find a replacement pipe, the only reliable fix will be to strengthen the existing flange, or fabricate a new one.

Welded the Helmholtz resonator (the blind-ended can) back onto the exhaust centre-section. Adjusted the handbrake while I had the pipe off.

The flanges are garbage, always have been. They need bracing up like mentioned.

As for the gaskets waste of money, use silicone.

I need a backbox for the chamade, trouble getting one that has the right tip.

Renault supply the ph2 box only and that is hidden behind the bumper on the saloons.

Caught the exhaust going into my driveway, so thats damaged the backbox where I welded it.

Indeed, silicone (specifically the high-temp variety) has served me well, just be very careful to ensure that none of it gets into the cat!

For this to work, the mating surfaces must be smooth and totally flat (eg. where Renault uses RTV sealant instead of a gasket).

Reshaped and reinforced the edges of the driver's door card, using some fibreglass. Yet another legacy of the ham-fisted moron who previously worked on the car.

Brakes done and painted..just need new slider dust covers for the front...anyone know best where to get them struggling cheers Sc

Drove my 3door for the first time after 5 weeks on holiday in UK and Europe.
Started and drove well. Ah good to be back in the drivers seat again. living the dream.

I'll need to go pick it up. Took the bike home last night.

Needs taxed as well. Just done the mot on it.

Oh yeah fitted 1 new tyre still to do the other, the tyres been sat there for about a month now. I'm just lazy.
