interesting topic, ive never declared any mod just because of it putting my insurance up. i had a 106 gti which i spent around £13k on modifying and a skyline which i spent around £10k on making it to a 450bhp beast.
i think when it comes down to my vee tho if i do make any modifications then i will tell my insurance company.

Speaking from bitter experience it only takes one arsey bobby stopping you or a knowledgeable insurance adjustor post-accident and the cards come tumbling down. No insurance pay-out, car or wreckage seized by BiB and a charge of driving without valid insurance, most likely resulting in a fine and some heavy duty points. Scary what the Law allows in such circumstances.

My rule of thumb is that if it can be seen (by eye or electronics) then I declare it. Also some underwriters (specialists) repair to the delared modifications rather than the OEM spec so in your 106 example (assuming you were with one of those specialists) you risked throwing 13k down the drain for the sake of a few extra hundred quid up front. False economy imo.
