There was a theory that as long as you got thrown free of the car everyone would be just fine. All that changed with the '55 disaster at Le Mans.

indeed, same with bikes, you get flung clear in theory. rarely happens though.

the fireball crash was pretty horrific imo.

Yeah the fireball one is pretty nasty, death for sure.

Half the others you see the car flip and land on the guy's head or something and think 'ow, he's dead', then he jumps up and runs off the track. Crazy.
