The metal inserts in the wheel that the valves screw into are splitting on 3 of my wheels. BUT the wheel place who fitted my new tyres couldn't shift em. Oh dear! :(

No leaks yet tho. [smilie=doubt.gif]

Peter :D

I removed mine when i had wheels refurbed Peter and two of them snapped on removal, so Mr renault if your reading your valves need abit of work or some money spending on them to make them descent.

Allthough a lot of you have a laugh at the tyreman, I can totally understand his reaction. It is common on expensive cars from Renault that they are equiped with pressure monitoring, and with the tyre mounted, you can't tell the difference.

Also one remark to Babyliss, despite your fun, you're actually the guy to laught at or better to feel sorry about, since you put rubber valves in your car. I hope you have the same fun on the track when the valve just pops out under heavy load.
That is the reason Renault put in metal fixed tyrevalves.
There is also one known accident with a Vee due to the usage of rubber tyre valves.

I track my V6 to its limit, and have rubber valves fitted. Granted they are the short motorcycle type (to reduce the stem bending at high speed), but rubber none the less. The only advantage I can see with metal valve stems is that under high speed, the stem will not bend like a rubber one will and stop any possible leak of air due to the stain on the valve stem. I had this problem with my 500bhp Skyline and at very high speed, the tyres would loose a little air pressure. Metal valve stems cured this, but they then cause dissimilar metal corrosion where they touched the alloy rim and caused the paint to lift where they met.

Oh my oh my, been away for a few days and look what's happening...........Obviously because a BMW M5, somebody's mothers car, presumely a flattened beetle, and skylines with 500hp have rubber valves they should be ok, well, allright then, you can use rubber valves, as long as you don't mind that I keep my steel ones [smilie=hi.gif]

one correction, the rubber valve on the accident car didn't pop out, it ripped at the base in a full load turn on the track.
And PLEASE don't hit me with your facts, why you should/could use rubber valves, I don't care what you do with your valves, I just provided information, PLEASE... [smilie=badpc.gif] [smilie=badpc.gif] [smilie=badpc.gif]

Harry not being funny but put your dummy back in!!!!

oh and they arn't steel valves they're aluminium hence why they corrode and snap off

I did agree with you - on the Skyline I fitted stainless steel valve stems to stop the leakage of air at speeds in excess of 175mph, but not that I had any thought that a rubber stem would pop out.

It is interesting to hear what you say and take note; I am sure we will all decide what we want to do. Did Renault fit metal or rubber stems from new to the cars? I guess the Alpine factory at Dieppe must have tested this issue?

Hi Nik,
Renault Sport has extensive experience with high power cars in extreme conditions, like the Clio rallycar. I got my car straight from the factory, and was fitted with the metal valves. But just consider this, we have a registered accident due to valve failure, also the metal valve doesn't break the bank.
It's proven, a metal valve is better specially in extreme motorsport.

I agree with what you say 100%, but the point was "is it necessary with a V6" not that I disagree with you and would not fit them. At about £20.00 for a set of 4 stainless ones, they are cheap and I may well fit them next time I need tyres. I have the short stumpy Mortorcycle type fitted at the moment and they seem to be ok for track days etc.

Its just that I have not heard of a valve popping out before. If this was caused during an accident when the wheel was involved, would a metal one have stood up better? There is always the risk with a metal valve of corrosion where the stem meets the wheel and the possibility of metal fatigue and even in an accident the stem breaking?

There are good points and bad points about both metal and rubber valve stems. One thing is for sure, never fit cheap annodised valve stems!
