Valver Soft Pedal Conversion - Determined to figure it out!

G

Guest

Right,

As some of you might know, on my last hybrid i attempted to perform a soft pedal conversion on my williams gearbox and uprated R5 GTT clutch from GSF.

Here's the parts i used:

172 release arm
172 gearbox bracket (to raise clutch cable up)
172 thrust bearing
New pivot bush, standard item
New valver gaitor for release arm
New williams clutch cable
New clutch pedal

Here's how it went.

Basically everything fitted ok, the release arm fitted nicely, etc. The gaitor i bought didn't fit, i think a 172 release arm gaitor will be required in future.

It's worth noting that the standard airbox DOES NOT fit with the 172 release arm in place without some serious choppage, but if you cut the intake pipe off and a tiny bit off the bottom of the airbox you can get it to fit.

Anyway, it all went together but the problem i had was with selecting gears. With the pedal stop in place, it was extremely difficult to get it in to gear. I had to take the pedal stop off the clutch pedal (which made the pedal sit extremely high) in order for it to work perfectly.

The clutch felt very smooth, and was much easier to cope with in traffic. The bite felt very positive, far better than the standard clutch, and could take some serious stick.

The problem was that i never figured out how to get it working with the pedal stop in place (i even tried trimming it down a bit).

So, i'm now building my second valver project, using a 1.2 gearbox, and i want to use the same R5 GTT clutch. Therefore i want to perform the soft pedal conversion as i don't want it stupidly stiff.

I've just called BB performance tuning to ask their advice on what to do. They told me they don't do a soft pedal conversion on a clio (i'm sure i've heard otherwise?!)

I then called K-Tec Racing, and they told me the same, however there was a guy there that performed the conversion on a R5.

He told me that the only parts he used were:

172 release arm
172 thrust bearing
172 bracket

The only difference was, he was using the R5 clutch cable, which he seemed to think was shorter than a clio item.

So, i think what may need to happen, is a different clutch cable to be used on a clio.

What i want to know is:

Does a Renault 5 clutch cable fit a clio?
Does a 172 clutch cable fit a clio?

Is the R5/172 clutch cable shorter than a valver clutch cable?

Does anybody else have any other ideas on how to get it working?

I'm determined to get to the bottom of it as i know some people on here are running soft pedal conversions and i want to create a guide on how to do it!

Any help or advice most appreciated!

I've installed the soft pedal conversion on my 16v box using the R5 GTT clutch, but haven't used it yet.

I've sourced volvo parts rather than the 172 version and knew about the airbox not fitting properly. Have you needed to modify/move the aux water pump bracket?

Craig

What parts have you used?

I'm guessing volvo release arm and bracket? are you using the standard clutch cable etc?

I didn't have to modify the aux pump position or bracket last time i don't think, could be wrong though.

I installed the R19 gearbox mount at the same time which required some chopping IIRC!

Used all volvo parts, arm, bracket etc with standard clutch cable. Ive also installed the 19 mount at the same time.

Im not hoping to have problems, but as it seems it looks like Im expecting problems based on your experience.

Reason I asked about the aux pump, on mine it looks very close to the gearbox bracket.

I used a laguna release arm, megane bracket which likes you say lifts the cable up and thats it, works fine

sometimes if you cant get in in gear without removing the pedal stop it might be worth considering a new pedal and ratchet assembly, Possibly a new cable too

Tried that mate.

I was using a brand new pedal, brand new cable, new release arm, new pivot arm, new clutch, new release bearing etc.

Could not get it to work at all with the pedal stop in place.

Anyone got a pic of a laguna release arm?

You got the problem of the clutch slipping off the ratchet mechanism as its pulling the cable threw as theres too much tension?

I have had to remove my green clutch stop block from above the pedal, this causes the clutch to work but with a mile high clutch! :(

Same problem kieran? I cudnt be arsed to read threw your post looked too long! :P

Yeah same problem mate. Won't work with the pedal stop in place.

I don't want it like this again because it annoyed the crap out of me!

It's gotta be something to do with the length of the clutch cable i'm sure it has!

I need to know if a 172 or R5 clutch cable fits, might give one of them a go...

i have soft pedal the BB fitted to the turbo, so they are bull shitting you mate, fuck em off they are full of shite these days which is a shame but there it is

my pedal sits high, never really bothered me

Probably the same as my old hybrid used to be.

Do you have a pedal stop in or did they just take it out?

I'm sure there's a way to do this...........!

pedal stop is there mate in all its unmolested glory and pedal still sits higher than my old clio's one :?

how is that possible?! :?

Surely the pedal stops job it to prevent the pedal rising any higher?

my thoughts exactly, altho i know there are several sizes of pedal stop from various renault models that use same pedalbox

tried spacing mine with some extra rubber nailed to it tho and all it did is slip the ratchet all the time

Same.

If i put the pedal stop back in i could hear the ratchet re adjust. If the ratchet didn't move it would have worked fine!

Thats why i think a different length of clutch cable is required...

I'd be interested in the solution to this too

although I will be using a 172 clutch, so that might make some difference?

still need to get off my bum and go to volvo for the parts

I can't see what difference the clutch will make? The release arm will still travel the same distance.

The only thing different between a 172 gearbox/clutch setup and the valver gearbox/clutch setup is the clutch cable.

The gearboxes aint much different, can't see the clutch making a difference... ?

It must be the answer!
