Having spent a few very frustrating minutes attemping to tease the locking nut socket from out of the long front wheel nut recess (once the nut had been tightened), I used a small piece of Duck tape doubled back on itself to expose the sticky surface. Hey presto it withdrew straight away.
The strip of duck tape is now stuck around the socket ready for the next time I need it!
