Timing belt

Hello all, as mentioned, I purchased a v6, 2002 with 15k miles. I know the timing belts need to be changed due to the age so was looking for advice.
I own a garage so was thinking of doing it myself, I've heard rumours the engine needs dropping out and a specialist would charge about a grand.
Any info or links would be good!

Thanks Chris.

Chris, it might be worth speaking with either Fred the owner of BTM Performance or Scott ( scotty6r4 ) from SG Motorsport LINK who's probably done more timing belts on these cars than any other person in the UK.

If you've got your own garage, it'll be doddle. It may take a little longer the first time around, but certainly not outwith your competencies! (I'd imagine)

Hi chris i done mine a few months ago ,i have my own garage and everything i needed inc ac machine .Its only about ten bolts to get engine out and it only a laguna engine anyway so isnt rocket science .pm me if want any details or a chat about it cheers neil

Cheers all, that's very strange about the Renault timing pin kit only coming with 3 pins! I didn't expect it to be too difficult, it's just a job I haven't done before! I was informed it was just a Laguna engine too! lol! I have an AC machine Neil so that should be helpful, I hadn't thought of that though. I had a quick look on Autodata earlier too! If I get stuck I'll send u a PM pal, thank you for your help!

A bit late on this, i did mine without taking the motor out on a ph2, it was a fiddle and had to have all the covers off and the top engine mount, took me about two days going steady. the info about the locking pins is correct , there are four in the kit but you use one locking the crank. i used some 8mm bolts and they worked as good as the pins.
Just be careful taking the belt covers of , there are lots of very small hidden screws, good luck!

All now done! Cheers for all the advice, (including the late one!) in all honesty it was an absolute doddle! Didn't remove the engine or disconnect A/C, to be fair, hardly disconnected anything besides the right hand engine mount! You were right about lots of small screws on the covers though, far too many little 6 mill head screws! I got a gates timing belt kit, an AST timing pin set (came with 5 pins) and a checking pin etc). Also changed water pump and drained all the coolant. Changed plugs, oil and filter, air filter and even the fuel filter too! In total, took about 6 hours for everything and I weren't rushing! ;)
You boys should try changing the fuel pump injection belt on a range rover sport..... Now they're fun!! ;)
Thanks for all the help again fellas, it's appreciated! :)

Good news that you have sorted it! Well done!!
Tried the turbos on a Disco4 255?? One of the main reasons mine went the journey at 9 months old :ihatpcs:

I still maintain that the vee probably has the biggest engine bay of any hatch back. Have to say, removing the rear manifold and down pipe is a pig.

Cheers! :) No, I haven't changed the turbos yet on the Disco 4, I have done a couple on the disco 3's though, and both turbos on several Range Rover Sport TDV8's were you have to split the body from the chassis! It looks proper wierd when they're in two halfs on the ramp! I'm guessing the Disco 4's will be a pretty similar stupid idea!??

Split mine twice as had two failures, corrosion on first ones at 5000 miles and manufacturing failure on replacements 3000 later, never trusted it further than I could throw it after that (and at over two tonnes that ain't far!), suspension 'glitches' with a trailer on, windows self deploying at in opportune moments and the most revolting shade of blue imaginable, always looked dirty black, never again!! having always had a Landrover on the fleet and with the crap that is the Defender I have now that has taken some rare effort to turn into a useable vehicle, seriously looking else where for something that will work in the fields when needed, good in snow and pull an Ifor williams loaded to the gunnels!

Yep, that's Land Rovers for ya! Very problematic but there's nothing else like them! Everyone that tries to replace them with other 4x4's always come back! It's just a good job that when they are working properly they drive really nice and people love them! I still struggle to comprehend how expensive Defenders are as really they don't have that much going for them..... Besides they'll keep going!!
But all in all, I'm glad people love them when they're running well, otherwise I'd go bust an have no cash for toys like my vee!! ;)

Hi Chris,

well done on the DIY timing belt! My phase one is due a belt service and the other service items you did and I note you have a garage. I'm looking for someone in the north to do mine but need someone who knows what they're doing and you certainly fit the bill. Would you consider doing mine? If so could you PM me with a price and availability, cheers, Alan

Just read through this and am amused! Still not back in a land rover myself as having faaar too much fun with the Ram Sport but Viv decided to go for another Disco so sort of back!
