suspension top mount...

more woes...

right fellas have my car booked in for a service on friday and my warranty is up on sunday [smilie=icon_eek.gif], so took it to a good mates garage on monday for it to be totally checked over so i could highlight any warranty items when i leave it in for its service...

the front left suspension top mount is gone and the rear left track rod end looking thing (is that the right name?) is gone, and a head light washer needs replaced.
My mate had the car on the ramp and showed me the play in both of the wheels which was real obvious and surprised me as recently when i had the gearbox replaced i had them check for a knocking noise which after two days they could not find, and had them check before for a crunching, grinding, creaking type noise form the front sometimes when turning on full lock which they could not find.

My question is really regarding the suspension top mounts, when replacing one side, should they do the other as well?? Also whats involved in the 3rd year warranty?

ive more or less lost confidence in them and after this service think ill be looking to somewhere else

The way I have always thought of suspension components is fit in pairs. If one side just manages to pass the MOT imagine what it's like for the next 10 months?

exactly, just glad i managed to get it booked in before the warranty was up...thought i still had another couple of weeks to go!

It couldve been a very expensive month then....service on friday, tax up on friday, need two new rear tyres, just had my side pods re-sprayed, have my centre dash console in now being repainted, and leaving my wheels in to be refurbished on monday, tis gonna be minty very soon :D

just stick it in say its broke can u fix it. When they ask for payment tell them its warranty. Take a spare set of keys though lol

remember reading before something about suspension top mounts being a problem are there any uprated items available?

Stiffer suspension mounts are available but their reliability is questionable.

I have just had my two top mounts replaced (one had excess play). Always good to replace in pairs.

Just out of interest if you don't mind me asking, why did you have to get a new gearbox?

Cheers,
Phil.

hard to describe the noise was like a slight 'wurring' noise, im far from an expert but just sounded like bearings or something needed replaced. It had no noticable difference in gear changes etc., left it with them, they had a listen and said that it was something in the 'box and the way they fix that was to replace it, first one they did and apparently a good 20 hours to do it they said, lol :s

but think ill just stick with renault parts for the top mounts and request that they replace both sides under warranty but really cant see that happening

though cheers for the link james

As others have mentioned, the top mounts do wear but from experience it's an easy job for them to replace them since I had one done just before my warranty ran out earlier this year. No quibbling from them, and a sub-30 minute job IIRC.

Nope ... just the one side on which the play was outside of acceptable levels. The other side was showing some play but not enough to warrant replacement. Since the suspension geometry wasn't altered by the new top they seemed happy to only do the one, and I've had no negative impact from that decision.
