5 GT Turbo Starter motor lighn up

Renault 5 gt turbo
I have just acquired a renault 5 gt turbo, upon trying to replace the starter motor I'm just getting a low grinding noise, it's not engaging into the flywheel, the dowel is in the middle lower hole but I can't get any movement to rotate it forward, is there an easy way to align it while on your own? Is the dowel in the right hole or dose it need to be in the middle upper hole? It aslo has 4 bolts 1 in each hole is that correct or just the 3, I've also counted starter teeth and there are 9 attached is a photo of where the dowel is currently fitted

As far as I recall the dowel goes in the outer middle hole, three bolts hold it on and the middle bolt goes through the dowel.
