Slipping out of Gear

dal.a

Member
I have developed a little problem, after selecting 2nd, 4th or 6th it slips into neutral unless I hold it in.

It doesn't feel like it engages proper when putting it in, it's like the linkage doesn't travel far enough in that direction.

I'm pretty sure it's not the box as its smooth in all the others and those if I hold it.

Any ideas on where to look 1st and how hard to access is the linkage?

Cheers.

Try adjusting the cable on the top of the gearbox from under engine cover ,im sure the forward and back throw was adjustable on the cable when i had mine out .

Cheers, I'll try and have a look when I'm back from fishing next week.

Thinking about it it must of happened after I left it on my drive overnight in 1st and there's a slight gradient. Maybe it stretched it or put pressure on something.

I've had a little look but without removing all the back I can't really get to much.

I'm pretty lost with this one as it seems fine but just don't go past that notch that holds it in.

I really want to take her for a proper drive too :(

The (notch) as you put it is called a detent ,it could just be a broken spring in the box but as the box is so weak it may just be worn out . does the lever look in the middle of the hole in console when in neutral or tilted forward or backwards pointing towards bad adjustment .Has anyone driven the car without you knowing and thrashed it ??? you need to be gentle with the chocolate gearbox .Just noticed you recently had a respray , did they test drive the paint ???

Thanks at least I have a little insight to what's what.

I'm pretty sure it done it on the way to dropping the car off for a respray so I should be able to rule that out.

Edit to say I do think the forward throw seems a lot longer than the backwards to 2nd etc. Again I'll check tomorrow.

I'm clutching at straws here but It was parked on my drive and I'd left it in 1st and turned the key so it jolted forwards, that's the only thing I can think off that I could of done.
I'll have to check the stick position when I'm home but I'm pretty sure it's central.

Oh and it's a ph2 gearbox if that makes any difference at all.

Sounds like a cable adjustment issue, I think there is info in the files section on how to adjust

That will be good if there is and it is that. It feels like it is.

I'll have a dig into the files when I get a min.

I had this problem many years ago with my 3rd gear. Felt perfect fine by all accounts but just wouldn't sit permanently in gear and made even worse by lifting off the throttle. Was a syncro problem.

I've had a good search and I can only think it is the cable as its in all the backward throw gears. Well I'm praying its that and not anything like the synchro.

I'm hoping it stops raining long enough today for me to actually have a look.

Right, I just moved the selector by hand on the gearbox and it goes in and out perfect. I then tried the gearstick with the engine off, again perfect.
Engine is now running, clutch down, all gears are perfect.

Thought synchro so went for a very short drive as I'm in a hurry and again all perfect.

I'm stumped but happy, I'm thinking moving it by hand must of done something.

I found a water pipe that was rubbing and would of gone through if left so I attended to that and also plugged a rear light cluster in properly as they removed them when spraying and it wasn't pushed In far enough so fingers crossed she's all good again.

Thanks everyone for their help it's much appreciated.

With damaged syncro teeth, a gear can still engage ok but will pop out of gear if they are heavily worn. A heavily worn syncro ring on the other hand will cause crunching due to being unable to match/slow gear speeds properly so they engage nicely with each ratio change.

I can report I drove 70 miles today, through the lanes down some A roads and through town.

It was 100% spot on.

I have no idea what it was all about but I'm feeling thankful it was literally nothing.

I feel your pain as I thought I had gear box or clutch issues a while back as you suggest it didn't always feel right when selecting gears . I tried the cheapest option first and changed the gear oil thinking that the garage I had it serviced at didn't put the correct grade in and had a good look about . Turns out when I had the engine dropped to do belts etc the cables may have stretched a little when putting it back in. But after I had changed the oil and had a clean up and made sure there was no obstructions to the cables the result was 100% again. Saved me a few quid ☺
