21 Turbo Scorpion Exhaust

Sods law, I just buy a new standard downpipe and mid section when i'm presented with a Scorpion stainless exhaust. It looks to have a 4" straight tailpipe, and that's all I know.
Basically, were there different flavours of this exhaust? I've heard about 3 and 2.5 inch piped versions, but were these Scorpion?
Are they the full system, or just downpipe back?

Most importantly, are they worth having over the standard exhaust?

Cheers,
Ben

The Scorpions were usually 2.5" from downpipe back (so mid and back sections only). they were OK, save for the reduction to 2.25" at the downpipe end, but then the OE downpipe is 2.25" anyway so it doesnt matter that much. The 2wd ones were usually twin DTM's though not 4" rolled and I remember the 4" Quadra Scorpions with this tailpipe were HORRIBLY restricted at the backbox and also 2.25 all the way through.

So - make sure its a 2wd not Quadra item, and check up the tailpipe and make sure there its a stupid tiny outlet into the huge tailpipe. It made it sound like a jet fighter, but it really choked the car badly...even worse then the OE exhaust.

It's currently fitted to a phase 1, so pretty sure it's for a 2wd. It also does indeed look like a small pipe inside the tail pipe, which tapers up to the full size.

Do you reckon that this one will be the crappy restrictive 2.25" type too, because of the tailpipe? The seller says that they are pretty sure that the downpipe is stainless too, but will verify at the weekend.

As Dave said they are from downpipe back. I've got the single can scorpion on my Quadra and it is the 2.5", reduced slightly to mate with the standard downpipe.

Looking at Richard's picture his turbo has a cossie back end so has a custom downpipe. That won't what you are buying.

Phil had the twin pipe DTM style on his fwd but cut out the centre box, it was pretty loud and obnoxious.

Custom from turbo back is the best route really, depending on what you want to achieve.

The only (non bespoke) system that came with a downpipe for the 21 was the Mongoose one. That was still off the OE elbow though and thats the most restrictive part of the whole thing.
If the one you buy has the tiny exit into the tailpipe its still worth having, just change the backbox for one that wont choke the shit out of it.

I have the 4'' Scorpion on my 2wd and i certainly feel its restrictiveness over the DTM i had previously fitted, however the DTM was just too loud on long journeys and that was with the centre box fitted, and i prefer the look of the single 4'' anyway.
The baffle came loose on my 4'' back box so i had it repaired, you can see in the photo the restriction.

Well the guy selling it hasn't got back to me yet, so I'm still no wiser as to what he actually has and if it does indeed have the stainless downpipe like he says.

I think i'd prefer it if it was a twin DTM, but the 4" is probably OK for the time being. Like Dave says, I can always change the back box.

Depending on my mood i swap between the 2 now and again ...
I always thought the DTM looked out of place on the 21 and the single 4'' suited it better, just a pity its restrictive.

All I can say the exhaust on mine is quiet, yes more noise than a OE standard item but nothing like some after market systems. (see my on board videos)
I get more cabin noise due to no seats or interior than from the exhaust, I even get complaints that it's to quiet for the car but at 95-98db at 4k that is within the homologation limits for new cars that have strict noise out put levels.
The actual exhaust is effectively a straight through system with a 400mm expansion box just after the down pipe and at the rear another 600mm box with twin 50mm ish round tails.
I do have a theory that these symptoms with a small internal pipe feeding into a much larger tailpipe acts as a megaphone hence the unpleasant boom when driving which all points to bad design from the start.
