Megane RS250 engine into R26 - using mk3 fuel pump

I am swapping the engine in my R26 with a RS250 unit retaining the R26 ECU and loom. Should clarify at this point that 'I' means 'I am paying Rentec in Edinburgh' ;)

Ok, so we are keeping the R26 ECU and loom and swapping in the RS250 engine with turbo and the mk3 inlet manifold, fuel rail and injectors.

I know that we should be able to run the RS250 engine with the existing mk2 fuel pump, although it won't offer the rising rate fuel pressure. The question is can we fit the mk3 fuel pump to my car and take advantage of the rising rate rail with the mk2 ECU and loom without a massive headache?

Yeah it's really tempting, but the wife is pregnant with the baby due after Xmas, so ideally I'm looking for a grown up car. Besides I think owning one highly tuned Renault is enough and even just owning the megane has distracted me from finishing/refining my Trophy's set up.

On the plus side most of the stuff will be going to a new home. The only stuff I need to shift is the 250 pistons on forged rods and the SMF, paddle plate and R26R cover. I'm surprised Paul is claiming 360lbft for the R26R clutch set up. My little brother had it on his forged megane running 319bhp and 360lbft and it was slipping after 1000 miles, hes got the set up I'm selling and its been spot.

Moving forward I've got a gripper ND0 box to go in the clio and also some trick hubs. Will try and get it sorted before Croft on the 17th, Megane is getting picked up on the 4th when Phil is back in the UK and he's bringing it to Croft.

Well one of the lads has offered to buy my R26 off me. So it's going when I get home. I'll still check the pressure regulator on that lexus sender and also pump compatibility. But that will be as far as I go.

I now need to buy a sensible ish car and resist the urge to buy a Clio 200. However with a full 250 engine (with forged rods), an ND0 box with an R26 diff, hybrid turbo, decat downpipe, 90mm airtec cooler, spare driveshafts, a SMF with R26R cover and 6 puk friction plate. I feel I'm only a set of injectors and ecu away from a straight forward conversion. I've even got a brand new set of 250 calipers for a big brake conversion.......

Let me know how you get on with the Lexus sender and pump compatibility.

That's a good point Arthur. I've been keeping an eye on the megane gt220 estates. They are rare as anything though, you can get a new one for about 16k but they are a depreciation disaster with estimated prices around 8-9k for a second hand one. So I'll just hang fire.

Cars that I've been looking at online 330d, 320d both saloons and tourers. A4, A5, A6 black editions. CLA Shootingbrake. I also keep looking at 135i, S3, Golf R and Seat cupras.

They will only be the same as the OE rods just of a higher quality. With the standard set up proving reliable at 360 bhp I don't think it will be an issue for the forged rods either.

I have a gt220, it's a great car for the money. I had it mapped by Henk and it's pretty fast.
Still in my Garage is a complete front axle from an RS (lsd-gearbox, cup shocks, brembos & bits to convert everything) who needs fitting. You can somehow build an RS estate:grin.gif:

I was more reffering to the fact oe rods have a much thicker small end then aftermarket rods, not wider, if you know what i mean

Back on the subject of megane fuel pumps... Does anyone know for sure whether the megane 225 runs the pump by pwm control (so modulates the pump speed or turns it on and off to vary fuel pressure) which is apparently quite common on modern cars or is it old school and just run the pump full speed permanently, using the regulator to maintain static 3.5bar at the rail under all operating conditions?

Someone I've been discussing with thinks it's the former, I think it's the latter,

Just sacrificed a 225 fuel pump for science, seeing the pics below i think the regulator of a 250 will fit without issues. Don't know which pump you had Steve but it looks alot different then yours.

Also i removed the pump to see if there was any numbers on it, unfortunately there wasn't so i have absolutely no idea how much it should be capable of flowing.....

Left is 197, right is 250, below these is the 225 regulator:

Well I kind of forgot about this. So just been into the garage to get the lexus sender unit.

Stripped it down and it does indeed have the smaller FPR as found on the R26 sender.

Part numbers on the Lexus FPR are

Denso - 4870
23280-31020

Will look at some way of testing it and have a look online for the part numbers.

I'm guessing the 225s use a similar set up to the clios. 20161012_201548.webp 20161012_202437.webp 20161012_202628.webp

The 225 one is deffo the same as Tutuur is holding there, deffo standard Bosch style.

I took it out and fitted it to a fuel rail from a 1.6 VW something or other.

That's with the original 3 bar VAG fpr fitted but the 225 one has the same dimensions and fits perfectly.
