RenaultSport Clio 172, 53 Plate, Silver.

Jon, my brother picked a phase II a couple of months ago. I will try a catch up with you a let you know our findings.

Ok Dave....thanks.....

So, the one i've spotted isn't an actual "cup" as it's a phase 1....all very confusing..........& in your modest opinion the phase 2 (like yours) is the one to go for....???

Jon

Well, it's got all the trimmings to make it a nice car to drive anywhere, anytime.

It behaves around town.

It's easy to park.

It's comparitively cheap to run when you compare it to the kit you'd need to compete with it

It does low 30mpg around town and OVER 40mpg when you stick the cruise on at 70.

But then- you make it angry. Poke it with a pointy stick. Get that rev counter over 3500rpm and it picks up and by 4000 it turns from a car into something I can only liken to an angry wasp. The induction noise is sublime....like....ohmygod sublime (with the induction filter on mine). I want a quiet exhaust because I want to listen to the maddened Clio draw breath.
The handling it utterly bonkers for a totally OE setup. I've hurtled into corners expecting to be dead within the next 3.2 seconds and not just come out the other side but done so thinking "I could have done that faster". I did a track day at Blyton with the RTOC and it was tearing up pretty much everything that wasn't a dedicated track car or Evo-esque. Drove it there. Emptied the tank on track (Still 16mpg!) and drove it home. Didnt miss a beat and hasnt since.

My negatives:
The tax is ?144 for 6 months, the robbing feckers.
Long runs on the motorway the 5th gear is a bit too high, i'd like a 6th to sit it at ~3k at 70, as it is it does 3500 or so....but then it has cruise and a good stereo so its a small critique.
Small bit of melty-steering wheel but thats coming off now as I clean it away slowly.
Drivers seat you can see has a little wear on it but nothing severe, no tears or backing showing through.
The barry exhaust has gotta go.

Um...thats it.....because I have resolved or preventatively replaced all of the common problems. I don't do it justice because I dont use it enough, once a week maybe, just so it doesnt sit idle. Literally a backup car waiting patiently for it's weekly runaround.

It's even got an integrated CAT1 alarm that deactivates the OE immobiliser, thus meaning the common dying-keyzapper problem isnt an issue....although the keyzapper still works anyway.

I originally bought it to sell it.... didnt work out that way did it lol. I'm not even sure I do want to sell it.

Thanks Dave...nice write-up......

What price did you have it advertised for last-time......??

Can't remember. ?1750ono I think, with 12 months MOT and six months tax at the time. I just put another six months tax on it yesterday and IIRC the MOT is June-ish but I bet it hasn't even done a thousand miles since the last one.

yer, but those 999 miles where driven within a thousandth of a millimetre of its life! LOL only joking!

Y'all know how I drive, you also know that the things get maintained to suit.

Anything that comes past me and survives you can be sure is hard as nails.

I'd still be hard pressed to sell it. I have just been offered a GT3582HTA with antisurge though. Spaff!

If it can handle Daves driving it could handle a week of abuse in the Alps & Pyrennes next spring.....:biglaugh:

My Birthday week!

Be rude not to. Not that I would just invite myself on your trip. But I'm inviting myself on your trip.

Cheers!

Dave, i can't see it being a problem....just need to keep the number of cars to no more than 5-6 max....

We'll be heading south from Le Havre to Clermont Ferrand, then across the massif central to Provence, then into the Alps, before heading west via the awesome gorge roads to Millau & onto Andorra & Spain for some Pyrenees action...then a National blast back north to Le Havre...
Leaving: Friday May 30th (night boat from Portsmouth)
Returning: Saturday 8th (evening boat from Le Havre)
That's 8 days of nationals, mountain passes, gorges & more nationals.....:rotate:

Would be good to have you along.....:wavey:

So far:

Me: unknown weapon
Phil: 944 turbo
Paul: GTA turbo
Ellis: unknown weapon

We all know you're an unknown "weapon" Jon but I didnt think Ellis was so bad.... :)

The Clio would lap that trip up other than it's short little legs would struggle with the long duration, high speed parts, ie high speed motorway cruising. Could do with a 6th speed!

Hmmm. Quadra would be good but only on this engine not the new one..... i'll have a think!
