Renault to limit top speed of all new cars to 112mph from next year

starting from 2022 , Renault new CEO has announced a 180 kph / 112mph speed limit on all Renault and Dacias.

Does not include Alpine and what is not clear is whether Renault Sport is classed as another brand so is not included as they have talked about high performance EV models even if they don't replace the current petrol engined range.

Also the EU and UK are to introduce speed limit recognition systems that automatically slow the car to the speed limit........

I can see used values of cars recently built staying strong for years for those not wanting all these new restrictions.

I do hope they don’t heavily tax older cars that are capable of going over 112mph, using that as an excuse to rid us of gas guzzlers.

Indeed James it would be great if they stick with the current system limiting the cost for older cars over 225g/km registered before 23rd March 2006 but the really interesting one is what they do with newer high polluting cars because currently the first owner pays a big whack at first registration then an extra £335 if they are over £40k list price but then after 5 years all cars irrespective of the CO2 rates go to a standard £155.
This was introduced in April 2017 so come next April all these Supercars and gas guzzler SUVs will be only £155 !

I can't see the Green brigade letting this happen ( can you image a Ferrari or Range Rover V8 costing the same £155 as a Fiat 500) and the Govt and treasury don't need any excuse to up the payments so I can see them reneging on this system and putting them into the dozen or so different brackets that older cars currently use.

If they don't then post 1st April 2017 gas guzzlers will be fantastic to own from a road tax point of view.

Slightly off topic [apologies] .. but my 'gas guzzler' 2004 V6 appears to be fine for the ULEZones [as for London & Birmingham] - yet my 2015 LandRover [DPF and all] is charged....

because there are different regs depending on petrol or diesel and emissions from diesels are a lot worse as we found out from VW so only ones meeting the latest regs are ULEZ.
