Its either insanity or not, can't decide currently šŸ˜‚ but I want to build a Maxi replica, does anyone here on the forum know how hard this is going to be? I've been quoted 20k to recreate the body panels, although I've seen some kits around specifically in Spain which isn't ideal given I'm in the UK. Its a huge undertaking I know, and ill probably waste money as no doubt it'll cost a fortune but I am just in love with that car.

Has anyone done this, can offer advice, etc etc? I'd love to have the engine in the rear, but I'm guessing that would have to be in day 1 rather than after, and yes complete newbie but quite good with my hands at picking things up quick and for super skilled parts of the car happy to pay professionals

Any advice?

Thanks for the replies, difficult to anticipate how much it's going to cost to build. I am guessing it would be a lot cheaper if it was kept front engined but then that kind of takes away the run and rawness. I want a project really rather than just purchasing a car, and i'm a designer by trade so I could product something similar to the attached (not to my taste but definitely the right direction) but again when it comes to manufacturing bespoke parts etc, i'm not up on costs so I'd imagine it'll be a hell of a lot?

Anyone have any rough estimates on what it would cost? I'd imagine a front engined replica is the cheapest, probably doable for 40-50k? Then I'm guessing the true replica is probably north of 70/80 ā€” I also love the idea of modernising it if it's not going to cost insanity money like the above, not super keen on the exterior myself but the interior is lovely. I'm a designer by trade so design and touches wise i know i can pull it off, just a case of whether it's even achievable money wise or if it's simply too expensive (excess of 100k)
 
Obviously anything is possible, it's just The Labour costs to replicate it. @gordini stu was/is planning on building a replica.

I think an original looking with modern running gear version is the way I'd go.
 
It's very commonly done especially in France but there's about 10 in the UK and I'm doing one too. The body panels are the cheap/easy bit - it's the chassis that is difficult, even the front is dramatically different
 
For me making the chassis would be the easier part, but I've never looked at one to see what's needed to be done.
 
Keep look at doing it, have the donor car and a few bits and pieces, loads of people fabricating chassis leg ,suspension etc but itā€™s deep pocket stuff with Turbo2 tax .
 
Web sites already mentioned are a good starting point . Seen the spainish kit , itā€™s not bad but they all need finishing as you would expect,
Try finding a decent car to start with as well , apparently 3 door cars in France , Spain etc are getting like hen teeth
 
Spoke to a brilliant guy at JL Engineering called John, super knowledgeable and he thinks starting with a R5T2 is the way to go, and then adding parts that wouldn't devalue the car such as this absolutely insane kit I am completely in love with... Screen Shot 2021-09-06 at 11.54.00.webp
 
I think the kit is available. But your best man to contact is a guy call Mark Wicks
I think he had a kit at some point . Not a fan of this one myself but I see the appeal.
He seams to know everything Turbo 2 related in the uk and beyond.
He runs a face book page tour de course and maxi junkies
