Renault 5 Turbo 2 mid-engine

Any ideas anyone please:
We have a Renault 5 Turbo 2 mid-engine standard K-Jetronic fuel injection. A superb engine that has been rebuilt. The engine is perfect. When the engine is started it is running spot on, no missing, ticks over superb. I can rev the engine and hear the turbo coming in and out. Everything fine in that department.

Oil pressure is as it should be and as it has been all its life. Breathers from crank case and rocker box cover breathing perfectly. Waste pipe from turbo into sump perfect but after the engine has been running for a few miles it starts missing. On removing the plugs a couple have already started oiling up and teeny weeny puff of smoke out the back but if I keep going it would get much worse.

Removing the pipe that does from the side of the turbo to the intercooler I found out there is about 1/2 pint of oil, fresh, clean engine oil in there. The turbo has been rebuilt by Turbo Techniques and they assure me it is alright.

Can anyone suggest anything at all or anywhere there may be a problem. I am at a loss with this one. Hope someone out there has a suggestion or two. Many thanks. Jan & tony

Have you checked that the injectors are all delivering fuel at the correct rates? - i.e. all the same?
Which plug is foul? - maybe the cold start injector is leaking?

After you clean out all the oil does it build up again? - if so they may have not put the seal in.
We run a throttle body BEFORE the turbo (most run after), which means that the turbo needs a seal otherwise the oil gets sucked straight past it - so check that

Hmm, doesn't sound alright to me. Definately oil leaking past the seals. Check the oil return line from the turbo to the sump for kinks in the pipe or blockages. The turbo requires a clean and unobstructed return path to the sump to prevent oil from welling up around the bearing, in which case oil will leak past and accumulate in the intercooler. As the engine warms she'll start to induct the oil and will start smoking.

I assume that there have been no modifications to the turbo and/or exhaust manifold? Mounted correctly the oil supply to the turbo should pass from the top to bottom of the turbocharger at an angle of typically no greater than 15' to the vertical. If the turbo is incorrectly mounted (possibly as a result of an aftermarket modification) the oil can likewise accumulate around the bearing and leak past, but from your description I don't think this problem applies to you.

My gut feel is that, if it isn't a blocked return line to the sump, you need to get Turbo Techniques to have another look at that turbo and account in detail for the work they did on it.

Geoff

Many thanks Geoff. The turbo is on its way back to Turbo Techniques. I feel exactly the same as you that this is where the problem lies. My only other way would have been to have a spare turbo to try but this unfortunately isn't possible.
I will keep you posted. Many thanks again.

Hope you come right Tony. Keep us posted how she works out. We have a restoration section on the forum if you would like to show us the work you have done on the car. 'Always interested to see new cars.

Everything fine now with my Renault 5 Turbo 2. The problem was the turbo after all. Didn't want to doubt the company but there you go. Will try to get some photos and will keep in touch. Tony I do the IT for Tony - not too good at adding photos but will try soon. Jan
