Renault 5 Turbo 2 mid-engine standard K-Jectronic fuel injec

Hi there,
We have a Renault 5 Turbo 2 mid-engine standard K-Jetronic fuel injection. A superb engine that has been rebuilt. The engine is perfect. when the engine is started it is running spot on, no missing, ticks over superb. I can rev the engine and hear the turbo coming in and out. Everything fine in that department.
Oil pressure is as it should be and as it has been all its life. Breathers from crank case and rocker box cover breathing perfectly. Waste pipe from turbo into sump perfect but after the engine has been running for a few miles it starts missing. On removing the plugs a couple have already started oiling up and teeny weeny puff of smoke out the back but if I keep going it would get much worse.

Removing the pipe that goes from the side of the turbo to the intercooler I found out there is about 1/2 pint of oil, fresh, clean engine oil in there. The turbo has been rebuilt by Turbo Techniques and they assure me it is alright.

Can anyone suggest anything at all or anywhere there may be a problem. I am at a loss with this one now. Hope someone is out there who has a suggestion or two. Many thanks
Tony

sounds like they have forgotten to put the carbon seal ring in the front of the turbo. as you shut the throttle plate, there is a vacuum formed in the inlet of the turbo. this then sucks oil from the core, along the shaft and into the compressor housing.

there is another thought. you have alot of pipes going into the throttle plate area. i bet you have some of the restrictors missing?

check the MR221 an PR manuals for it. they are online....

My understanding is that the oil just collects in there over time, at least that's what I've been told.

I would suggest removing the intercooler and cleaning it out thoroughly with solvent. Then put it back and drive the car. Check after a few drives how much oil there is in there. If there's a large amount, then start further investigations.

By the way, I also run a forum dedicated to the R5Turbo and Turbo 2 - it's here:

Why not check it out and ask the question there too?

Thanks,

Andrew

Thanks for your help. All pipes onto throttle body checked &correct. Turbo charger removed & returned to people who rebuilt it before. Explained to them again (they didn't seem to know what to say). Turbo came back like brand new once again. Fitted it, changed oil/filter, & all the bits and pieces etc. Tried it for good 50 miles - removed intercooler pipe - dry as a bone. Turbo charger sounds different - car is back like a rocket.Once again many thanks for all your help.Sounds to me like they had left a seal out or put the wrong one in but wouldn't tell me. Do the Gordini club accept Turbo Two's? Regards Tony

glad its all worked out for you.

there are several clubs specifically for turbo 2's including the one Andrew runs.
there is a yahoo.com group called R5Turbo, which has a few american and english people with them - its worth a look.
also renaultclassiccarclub.com has a specific register of turbo1/2's.
if you really want to talk technical, but run the gamut of the chav label, then the RTOC (renault turbo owners club) could be place to go too.

Hi - to add a photo to the forum you must upload it as an attachment (see below where you post).

Then once uploaded you can post it inline - try it and see!

Hi -

That link didn't work - looks like you uploaded a shortcut rather than the zip file itself - fancy another go?
