Other ( non boosted Renault ) Renault 21 blower motor and heater cable clips

Good evening all. I've been sorting out minor things on our R21 TXE auto when time and health permits.

Blower

Our blower has given up. Blew the fuse with a pop. After months of steamy windows, I've removed it.
When 12v is applied, there's quite a bit of resistance and virtually no movement.
I assume these aren't worth fixing? I've been trying to sort a replacement - does anyone know of any good places?
£240 is a bit steep otherwise! (Part number 7701032300).

Of course, the Haynes manual removal procedure didn't highlight that there is no way of getting to one of the screws in my version without having to remove the centre console. :)

Heater cable clips

Also, I remember seeing that the heater control clips on phase 1 R21s give up. I can't currently change the distribution.
I'm going to give cable ties a go (bad blurry picture further below). Unless you can get the clips?

General work

Otherwise, progress has been good. Car's been MOT'd for about 8 months. Did a few jobs before hand;

- Cambelt, water pump and service (Mechanic)
- Usual rust at end of one of the sills: welded, repaired and repainted (Painters)
- Gearbox fluid flushed and replaced (3rd which is top gear is still clunky to change into)
- Replaced radiator, cooling fans and some of the wiring (me)

Next plan is to replace all the door lock solenoids. I've had them for nearly a year and not got round to ripping the door cards off!

Thanks all!

The blower motors aren't free spinning as in you can spin it by hand and it runs for a while, it'll stop fairly quickly. I usually put a bit of oil on the spindles and run it off the battery for a few minutes. If it's stiff/seized then you'll have to replace it.
Every one I have taken out (inc the resistor pack) comes out without taking any trim off, I did one this week without even removing the glove box.
The fan wheel and motor pull out of the plastic bottom housing so you may be able to try something like this in the OE housing.

Take the whole heater control panel out, clean it up and lube the sliders. Also lube the cables as they get stiff and thats what breaks the clips.

Those stupid little white end cable retainers only come as part of the main assembly so you either need to source good used ones or have some made (would be easily 3D printed). Zip ties wont work usually as you need to be able to both push and pull the cable end to move the sliders.

You can get the metal clasps that hold the sheath, as they are the same part on a Vivaro / trafic
Or you can find the odd NOS kit lying about for something else with them included

Id be tempted to strip the blower motor down, might be able to repair it - new bearings etc. Might even just be bunged up with old grease and shite.

Thank you for your extremely helpful and thorough response - as yours always are.

I didn't remove the glovebox either to take the motor out, I was a bit scared to be honest! However, one screw was part covered by the leading edge of the console as was access to the part of the heater pipe that I needed to remove. I didn't want to risk breaking it by trying to bend it to access the screw.

I did also manage to pull the motor from the housing. I'll be honest, I'm not sure how to oil the spindles! But below is the motor as it currently is.

SPLENDID idea about the 3d printing. I'm struggling to find a business that will do such a small task but will continue to look as it is the only possible solution. I've found mechanisms in France but the particular vendors who have them won't currently send to the UK.

I did grease one of the wires and the movement but I'll go further on your advice.

Thank you for being such an R21 lover!

Thanks! This is the route I'm planning. I'm no expert in this so although I'll give it a try I was also wondering about dropping it off to any local company I could find to renovate/rewind.

Social media is the way forward. Ive come across some super helpful people on this group 3D Printing UK - some very clever printers on there that just love to geek out over it. Make sure if you get some done you get the stl file so we can print more in the future, maybe even some stock for the club shop.

Cursed for life :)

This is the main spindle shaft, rotate the blades and youll see it move. Get a bit of 3 in 1 oil down in there between the shaft and race.

If you're brave you can take the fan blades off but you'll need a new retaining clip that sits on top of it.
